Wind energy in Tanzania: Eurus Energy invests in Miombo Hewani wind farm

Eurus Energy Holdings Corporation, one of Japan’s largest wind energy developers, acquires a share in Winlab Africa, a subsidiary of the Australian group Winlab Limited, with an investment of $10 million. The money will be used to finance several projects, including the Miombo Hewani wind farm in southwest Tanzania.

The development of the Miombo Hewani wind farm project in Tanzania is accelerating. Windlab Africa, a subsidiary of Winlab Limited, a company based in Canberra, Australia, which initiated the project, has recently received a $10 million investment from Eurus Energy Holdings Corporation, one of Japan’s largest wind energy developers.

Will Tanzania soon have the largest wind farm on the African continent? This could be possible if the project of the Chinese group Sany Heavy Industries comes to fruition. The group, which specialises in the manufacture of construction machinery, is diversifying its activities, also producing wind turbines.

For several years, the company has been developing its own projects. In Tanzania, it has obtained an agreement with the government to build a wind farm capable of producing 600 MW, making it the largest facility of its kind on the African continent, thus offsetting the Lake Turkana wind farm which supplies 310 MW of electricity to the grid in Kenya.

Advantages of Wind Power It's a clean fuel source. Wind energy doesn't pollute the air like power plants that rely on combustion of fossil fuels, such as coal or natural gas. Wind turbines don't produce atmospheric emissions that cause acid rain or greenhouse gasses. Wind energy is a domestic source of energy.

It would appear my posts on wind energy have upset poor old Harry Aerial. GW humiliated Harry when he suggested it would take 90,000 tonnes of coal per month to support a 300mw power station. EDL are about 86k tonnes short per month and Harry is left wondering why the SP is languishing at one thirtieth of a penny!

Miombo Hewani Wind Farm warm
Construction of the project dubbed Miombo Hewani Wind Farm warm will take place in three phases of 100MW each, with the first phase which will cost US $250m, estimated to serve over one million residents of Makambako Township.

For the company to generate its first 100MW, it needs 34 wind turbines and also electrical infrastructure to connect the wind farm to the national electricity grid at Makambako substation

Upon completion, the wind farm will have a lifespan of 25-30 years and will have a capacity of generating enough power to light some three million households, based on current per capita usage. The power generated at Miombo Hewani will be sold to the Tanzania Electricity Supply Company (TANESCO).
