Anyway how is all for you lot this year so far?

Incredible how little affected by the war the market is! I have quite few AMD and Intel which insulate me even further.

Overall my shares are worth the most ever.

and on top of that Intel is looking to have a bonanza day.

Do you remember Bonanza, used to love it as a kid, what was the name of that family, Lee J Cobb was the old man of? And the music, those old shows music was great.

I don't watch much proper telly any more, news and such, sport and just occasionally something that catches my eye.

I do watch a lot of foreign stuff on C4 Walter Presents,, some really good stuff!

Have to go to Denver for my nieces wedding in June, be my 1st visit to US since my sisters death, which will be odd.

Hello everyone, I am feeling a bit down right now. Nothing special just life is a bit dull.

Before this RBB thread used to be a place I would come and brighten up from.

So here I am! Trouble is I have not a great deal to say, and you all seem to be in same boat! I worry what has happened to others that used to post here, Treacle especially?

Anyway my own shares and the ones I look after for my wife and daughter are all doing okay. Some particularly good like AMD, some particularly badly like a few I won't mention. Overall though we have recovered well from the kicking from Trumps tariffs back in April or May whenever.

I was wondering what any of you might tell me about buy backs by companies of shares?

I thought perhaps in a simplistic way, that the point was buy back some shares and cancel, so reducing amount of shares about and so as the company would be worth the same the proportion accounted for each share would increase so price would improve.

I am not so sure now this is the be all and end all of it, things can be held in the companies treasury and maybe reissued to staff and maybe other things?

What do you guys know about?

I have a couple at least doing this lately, VOD and VTY. VTY stopped divs in favour of buybacks, how do you all think about that?

Hello everyone, summertime is almost over and we have been lazing and not posting, good for us!!

It took me ages to find the RBB posts as loads of rubbish was before and we have 3 new boys who are rubbish too.

So at least my post will bring this thread to the top again if only briefly.

Things have been okay for me most of time, some good some bad the good winning out though at least for now.

I started this post and can't now think of anything solid to say, so for now I will wish you all well.

Hello everyone, it's 2025, come on.

My shares are a mixed bag, some have done very well and some have done very not well. So overall I am about in the same spot, but if anything on the down side. My Xiaomi shares have done fantastically, have sold a few and hanging on to some to see where it all ends up.

I am not best fan of Donald Trump, but you have to admire how much he seems to have done already, if only you could like it. He is such a crass individual, maybe sometimes what is needed for president but not for me.

I've bought a newish Kia hybrid, it is pretty wizzy, all sorts of mod cons. I hadn't thought about but it sounds an awful lot like Kier, just not as dull, hopefully it won't let me down as hopefully Mr Starmer won't let us down. Who shall I bet on!

Have been doing a bit of work with an old friend on a 60's 1750 Alfa Giulia, lovely car but door windows and furniture just so horrible to work with, will be nice in the end but not much fun.

Not much else to report, looking out on my wild garden wondering if I will ever get stuck in, or whether I will leave to the wildlife. Wild life, that would be nice but not anymore!

Stocks improved but now have had a bit of a collapse.

Seems my only concern about POTUS.

Still we will have to see how things go, market, world, US.

Into October and nearly out again with only now 3 messages.

I am muddling through things right now, selling and buying very occasionally.

Today I am looking at my Philips shares crashing 17%, could be a good buy for some of you!? and equalling things out my Basic Net shares flying up 40%, unfortunately PHIA was the bigger holding so value wise the 2 equalled.

I keep worrying about a crash and then thinking things might be good, so as usual I really have no idea.

It's funny I had written in my diary think about investing in Japan on Sunday, then the crash, don't know if they got wind of that? They realised by Monday night I guess, I had done no such thing, so recovered. I need be more careful what I write down or I may cause a world recession.

Have done a bit of buying while all this was going on got some Intel INTC and some ENT, gambles really. Also bought a few more PUMA this am.

Hello O and the rest of you as hopefully you still hang aroound reading if not writing. Things do appear to be on the up, but are not exactly convincing. I sold a bunch of shres 2nd half of April, as I want to liquify some money to offer on houses. Still not made an offer and a lot of those sold have done better. But luck was with me on AMD which I sold half my holding at almost the high getting $210, now it's back at about $150. I had quite a few so that has made up for the poorer returns I managed on others I sold.

Not much else to say, it's better when we get on a roll and conversation maybe will start to flow.

Would be nice I miss it, one time Red Braces gave me a lot of enjoyment.

Though I understand why you don't want to start looking at the shares as costing better than they actually did, it seems silly not to transfer all. You could make a spreadsheet of your original costs or you could set up a portfolio at the original costs on some platform or other. You can do it here or Yahoo, or Google, MS maybe and many others. Also sometimes it is better to kind of start again, those shares whatever you paid for them are only worth what they are today! We all are probably held back from selling when we haven't achieved returns we hoped for and it is often not the best thing to do.

One last thing I forgot I was going to post. I have some Ceres Power shares CWR, which have not been great for me. Today they have tumbled a bit more. RBC the broker has rerated them from a target of 600p to 150p, how can they do that. Are they not experts, employed at monitoring companies and business. It's not that they have cost me a few quid, it's just were they saying to clients Monday, "yeah CWR probably 600p" and by end of week, "well we reckon 150p. So you bought some, surely not, we only give advice Silly!".

You might note some good punctuation going on, though I am never sure about punctuation!!

Hello T, nice you posted in 2024! My portfolio still doing well, but has had some setbacks this last week or so, maybe even this whole year! I looked at MKS and nearly sold at about 290 after a mini boom from Christmas sales expectations. So many times the market gets carried away and then even when things were good they were not good enough so share price falls. As per MKS has done this and as so often I did not get myself into gear and sell. Oh well, sometimes I cannot seem to stick with lessons I have learnt in my now 15 years at investing. I am not working at the moment and probably won't have not worked for a year or more. I had an offer when I was just about to visit my sister in US when she was 1st ill. Could not do that and now I just don't feel I'm up to it, more than I think I might be okay but worry about my health and just don't see why risk it. I miss it though, even the things I would say I didn't enjoy like the getting up and travelling. I think I did enjoy them and they structured my day.

For big N I still have most of my YCA though sliced some off a while back, they continue to do well, might sell up soo!. Did you ever get some, shame if you didn't. Where and how are you, and now you have a reason to post and answer me!

O, in Australia, it's such an adventure and great time to be there I would think. In 1963 my parents started us on emigrating there in the end my father preferred to desert us and leave, he was such a waster. Hello everyone, things have improved in value with most of my shares. Haven't done much other than sit and watch. Today looking good so far, good or at least inflation maybe. Bought some ENt bck the other day, I had sold some but not all a little while back. They had dropped to nearly 800 so bought back roughly what sold. They have done okay since so maybe selling again soon. Have been dong a bit of top slicing here and there on stuff that has gone weel and might be peaking, all guesswork as usual. And another thing capital gains I think can be spread out across the years they occurred so if your £6,838 is not entirely in 23/24 then you should not likely be due any. You need check that out but I am sure that the one time I dealt with

Just to clarify my "already too late" remark, that is to register for self assessment, not the actual submission. Whether you might somehow register for self assessment after the cut off which is in Oct. from memory I don't know but you can try.

And I am not at all an expert in these things but have been subbing my own self assessmnets for 20 years or more and even once had to do capital gains. Also involved doing business taxes, and HMRC have always been helpful when you face up to things which is what you seem to be wanting.

Why don't you just ring up HMRC. They are pretty helpful often. You haven't done anything wrong and it is only small amounts, so what's the worst that could happen? It might save you a lot of time and effort.

If not ask the organisations you are using for these savers they should be able to advise you.

The alternative to this might be registering for self assessment on the .Gov site and then just answering the questions/filling in the forms then subbing and paying..... if this is for 22/23 you are I think already too late. If all this is for current tax year you have all the time in the world, but can start finding out in prep.

Don't stress yourself out too much about it, it is not a big deal, I almost am inclined to say HMRC shouldn't be that bothered about it and neither should you, but maybe that is not good advice.

I look at comments like yours and often wonder if they are serious, I am not sure I could name a benefit? There are a few difficulties it has made for me and my family as we try and live our fairly ordinary lives.

Not quite sure why anyone would want that for us, but if we are free and we mostly benefit from that, just let me know a bit of what we are benefiting from that is real.

I wonder whether to try and sell up in big quantities whenever these things happen, but never do and they seem to go away so enough.

Topped up US holdings in TELL (gas) and VFC (clothing), they were at lows no other justification, will have to see if it was wise.

My overall portfolio values holding up nearly though have lost some ground from when i said were pretty unaffected a week or so back.
