“ My helium stock is giving me a big lift
Anyone hoping for a quick hit from the helium exploration outfit I wrote about here a couple of months ago could be forgiven for feeling, well, a bit deflated. Back then, in what amounted to a lengthy wealth warning, I admitted investing just over 1 per cent of my life savings in Helium One Global (HE1) and said drilling was due to start in May.
Sad to say, gas exploration is a risky business that can take longer than expected, especially when it is somewhere such as HE1’s site in the East African Rift Valley in Tanzania, and there is an armed insurrection across the border in Mozambique.
However, this week there was news out of Africa. David Minchin, the chief executive of HE1, said: “We are very excited to have identified helium in drilling mud from very shallow depth.Although encouraging indicators of free gas, it is important to note that a helium show is not evidence of commerciality and further evaluation is required to confirm potential pay zones.”
Less might have been more, so far as market sentiment is concerned, and the second sentence of this cautious statement initially caused the share price to slip lower. Then it spiked 30 per cent to trade at 27p a share on Friday.
As I invested at 10.6p in April, I am content to hang on and enjoy the ride. But I would remind anyone tempted to join this adventure that my original article began: “Bonkers, totally bonkers. That would be a reasonable reaction to what I have just done.”
This could end in tears. Anyone who will cry if we lose money should sell now.?”
