Slaves were not wanted in England and Wales for economic reasons.
Cheaper and less worry to have "Free Men " and their whole family working and being pad subsistence wages
1. The employer did not need to buy the worker, no outlay.
2 . The whole family was used as labour from young children upwards.
3. The employer did not need to house them.
4 The employer did not need to feed them.
5. The employer did not need to provide a safe place of work.
6. In some occupations where the employer would supply tools the cost of the tools was taken from the employees pay so even reducing their earning more.
7. No work and no roof over their heads no food so people died of malnutrition, starvation !
8. If those that were ill and lucky they could ! go into a work house, they as the name suggested had to work to have a roof over their heads and subsistence meals.
1. The slave owner bought the worker so there was an outlay straight away.
2. The slave owner had to house the slaves so another outlay.
3.He had to feed the Slaves another outlay.
4. He had to clothe the slaves.
5 He provided medical services.
Slaves were not cheap and were not abused as much as some like to portray .
When you consider children were being hung in England into the 1800s under " the bloody" code! or transported with a one way ticket.
Corporal punishment was used on children women and men .
Living conditions were deadly, lack of sanitation, back to back 2 up 2 down hovels the top rooms reached by ladder, no education .
Alcohol consumption was high , food of low quality and any meat was usually offal, no medical aid, no heating in winter, high infant mortality due to filth and lack of medical care and poor food, giving birth killed a high proportion of the women.
One branch of my family in 1841, the year of the first census shows then living in a cellar !
In 1914 at the outbreak of the 1st world war a large number of the men who volunteered were excused duty due to malnourishment .
Many people in the Northern states opposed slavery, because they thought it would spread North so undermining their own prosperity and jobs. Four border states actually laws allowing slave ownership all through the civil war and would return escaped slaves.
Yes our ancestors had so much privilege that I am jealous of them.
Reparations if due are due to whom?
Should reparations be paid by whites to blacks whose ancestors were sold into slavery in the first instance by Africans?
Africans along the East coast of Africa sold slaves to the Arabs and INDIANS for a thousand years. Yes the sub-continent was deep into slavery but no one ever mentions it especially the BBC or the lefty luvvies.
With out African primary participation the Atlantic slave trade would not existed to any great extent.
