"Gold-quartz veins are the Earth's fingerprints of ancient fluid pathways, often marking crustal-scale fault systems," explains Dr. John Thompson of Cornell University (2022, Geology Today). These telltale markers indicate where past geological conditions were perfect for precious metal deposition.
Some of the most impressive gold nuggets ever found have been in quartz veins where gold-bearing fluids flow through faults in earthquake-prone rock. During seismic activity, the stress on quartz can generate piezoelectric voltages capable of drawing gold from these fluids.
But often the price of gold-bearing quartz is more than the value of the gold. Specimens are highly prized raw once you've got all the dirt out. If there's a lot of surface gold on a piece it may end up selling for twice the actual spot value of the gold if you can find a buyer.
