Chief executive at WH Smiths Kate Swann has sold 143,275 of her shares in the firm for a total of £801,853. The disposal of the shares, at 559.66p each, brings her total stake in the company to just over 1.2m, equivalent to 0.77%. The CEO also purchased 275,493 shares at an undisclosed price, in a move which took her share in the firm up to 0.87%, before the sale which followed soon after.

In order to focus on its core products, National Grid (NG.) has agreed to sell its metering business Onstream for 274.3 million pounds. The proceeds will be used to fund its ongoing investment programme. On the lighter side, the power company blamed a squirrel (right) entering its Warwick substation for power outages across the region, causing 27,000 residents to be without electricity. This is the latest of several recent power outages which National Grid has attributed to the bushy tailed critters, both in the US and UK.

Ryanair yesterday outlined plans to double its size by buying 300 new aircraft with companies from Europe, America, China and Russia battling it out to build them. The budget airline’s boss Michael O’Leary said it was “aspiring” to buy between 200 and 300 new narrow-bodied planes between 2015 and 2021 taking its total fleet to 500. It was in talks with Airbus, Boeing, China's Comac and Russia's Irkut, writes the Daily Express.

Time is running out for G4S to convince its shareholders to back a deal to buy Danish cleaning firm ISS. The £5.2billion plan was announced last Monday, only one working day after the security company’s top investors were informed of the deal, and caused shares to slump more than 20 per cent. After being in America last week, chief executive Nick Buckles yesterday flew to Copenhagen where he met with investors who control 12 per cent of the company’s stock, reports the Daily Mail

Fuller, Smith & Turner, the west London brewer and pub owner, bought no pubs at all last year and in December lost to Young’s in bidding for Geronimo Inns, notes the Tempus column in the Times. This summer, it lost another bidding auction, to buy the Capital Pub Company, to Greene King this time. The battle became distinctly bad-tempered, with the target management making it clear that they would prefer to be bought by anyone but Fuller’s. Instead, Fuller’s is taking a longer route, buying individual pubs or small numbers in the same deal. It has acquired ten so far over the past six months, including the famous Coach & Horses in Soho and The Lamb & Flag in Covent Garden, the last for an undisclosed but apparently generous sum. Yesterday the company added another five new pubs from Marston’s in a deal worth £16 million, including another couple of London landmarks, The Hand & Flower in Olympia and The Wellington in Waterloo. Also on the list, The Pavilion End in the City. It brings the total estate to 365. The shares are trading on 17 times’ this year’s earnings; high enough, given the difficult times in the market, says the paper.

Whatever its intrinsic merits, the attempted purchase of ISS of Denmark by G4S for £5.2 billion has focused attention on the more cautious acquisition strategy being pursued by another big name in the outsourcing sector, Compass Group, says the Tempus column in the Times. Compass is buying Integrated Cleaning Management for an undislosed but probably small sum, in the context of the group as a whole, with the company having revenues of £61 million in the latest financial year. This takes Compass further into cleaning and support services and away from its core food operation. The shares have always commanded a high multiple because of that record of growth, but 13 times’ earnings for the year just started does not look unreasonable. A strong hold, says the Times.

The US economy saw tepid growth in the second quarter, with analysts increasingly worried about the strength of the recovery. But this uncertain backdrop has not stopped InterContinental Hotels, the world's biggest hotelier, from powering ahead in the past nine months, with the US arm seeing strong demand, writes the Investments column in the Independent. It has registered growth in revenue per available room (revpar) – a key measure for the hotel industry – at all of its seven brands across the pond, including InterContinental, Crowne Plaza, Holiday Inn and Hotel Indigo. We believe that IHG – which trades on a forward earnings multiple of just over 8 – is still a buy and will rebound. Future investors should also note its shares are forecast to yield more than 6 per cent next year. Buy, recommends the paper

Major US teaching hospital uses CardioQ-ODM to improve patient outcomes and reduce lengths of hospital stay 25 October 2011 - Deltex Medical Group plc ("Deltex Medical", "Company" or "Group"), the global leader in oesophageal Doppler monitoring ("ODM"), notes the first publicised results from implementing its CardioQ-ODM system in surgery in the USA within an enhanced recovery programme. Doctors from Duke University Hospital, North Carolina, presented their findings from implementing enhanced recovery in bowel surgery to doctors attending the American Society of Anesthesiologists annual meeting in Chicago on 14-19 October 2011. The Duke protocols include the use of CardioQ-ODM for fluid management during surgery. Key findings from the first 142 patients included: · 100% of cases were treated under the enhanced recovery protocols within six months; · 89% compliance with the part of the protocol requiring fluid management using CardioQ-ODM during surgery; · lengths of hospital stay for patients undergoing open surgery were reduced 40% from 11.8 to 7.1 days; · lengths of hospital stay for patients undergoing laparoscopic surgery reduced 25% from 6.5 to 4.9 days; and · post operative wound infections and urinary tract infections were both almost halved. The results from Duke were also presented alongside an update on the roll-out of enhanced recovery programmes in the NHS in England at a reception in Chicago hosted by the British Consul General and attended by senior clinicians invited from some of North America's most prestigious hospitals.

Allied Gold Managing Director and CEO Mr Frank Terranova comments: "From Simberi's modest beginnings it is apparent the oxide and sulphide resources provide opportunity for production well into next decade. The focus of much of 2011 has been to prepare for the expansion in 2012. There have been some challenges at Simberi during 2011 and production for calendar year 2011 is now expected to be approximately 58,000 ounces compared to the 70,000 ounces originally forecast. The lower production has seen our average cash costs increase. This means the cash costs for the year will be in the order of US$1000 per ounce compared to the US$850/oz it would otherwise have been. We anticipate that the production rate of 70,000 ozpa will be reflected in the March quarter and then a lift in production during 2012 towards 100,000 ozpa. Higher throughput will reduce costs and the investments we are making with heavy fuel oil generators should also push costs down further." Drilling continues at Simberi on the oxide and sulphide potential of various pits. The bankable feasibility study for a 150,000 ozpa sulphide circuit to lift Simberi production towards 250,000 ozpa by mid decade is scheduled for release in mid-2012. The Group continues exploration operations to further build on the resource base in Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands.
