Financial stocks are set to fly as we recover from the pandemic.8 Jun 2021 01:21
This is the cover story of this weeks’ “Money Week” of Monday 7th June. A respected and long standing periodical that approached the digital age with the understanding that standing still was not an option.
A long read here, covering a lot of ground, but well worth it in the end… I think?
For those who just prefer to get to the summary, with my added expansions in brackets, it reads as follows:
“Finally, there are five bonuses around the corner (for the Banks)
1. Banks can be winners from the likely return of inflation, as bond yields rise so their NIMs (Net Interest Margins of the Banks’) should improve.
2. As the (Covid) pandemic ends, demand for loans for housing, other durables and business is recovering sharply.
3. Yet the real profit boost will come from (unusually) prudent loan-loss provisions. Many banks were over-providing for loan losses pre-pandemic. Provisions increased sharply, but as they are written back, profits will soar.
4. Moreover, many banks have considerable surplus capital. The scope for large and rising dividends is the best of any sector.
5. Finally, the advantages of incumbency (those that have been around the longest compared to new competitors) are enormous.”
