Just imagine if the Pound remained at or under 1.25 EUR! UK property and living would start to look cheap. Europeans might visit the UK or buy second homes there instead of vice versa. Renault (no.1 car in UK) and others would lose ground to Vauxhall and Nissan. The UK is currently an importing and consuming nation with France the exact opposite (fiercely protected industries and parochial consumers) and Germany roughly neutral (with an export surplus). This could turn on its head. Americans used to look flash in quaint ole Europe, the shoe is on the other foot just now.

GBP stabilising at or below 1.25 EUR would cause major upset. I know that the ERM used to peg GBP at 1.35 EUR, and of course that was when GBP traded at or above 1.45 EUR... I think that the wave will pass from US, over UK to EUROzone and FE. I think that the Pound will recover to 1.35 EUR, especially if Iraq and Afghanistan calm down.

I am very interested in the currency shifts - the bigger picture. I am in S of France and paid in Euros. Our properties here are worth a lot of GBP or USD right now. Berlin still looks like great value, and to a lesser extent Munich. If I base myself in EUR, having always thought in GBP, then the devaluation of the Pound is more significant to my assets position than LSE market fluctuations.

Would you leave where you are for Zimbabwe if Mugabe gets the boot or, when you say it will be your focus, do you mean you will make some investements there? I too would like to see that place straighten out.

I was on holiday last week but noticed that RTO did briefly touch 100p. As we get close to the ex date it should rise but I would have expected the price to be higher than this by now.

Here's what I wrote a few days ago, "Final x-div (5.25p) 16-Apr-2008, Payment date 23-May-2008, that is just over 6.9% at SP=76p." This is currently just over 5.25% but I fully expect the price to go over £1 next week.
