Wincanton has taken its prototype LST on a tour of its UK
customers’ bases to show the new vehicles’ capabilities, get customer
reactions and establish support for them to be incorporated into
its fleet. The LST has been viewed by Argos, Sainsbury’s, WHSmith,
GSK, Nestle, Heinz, Screwfix, adidas, Mattel, Tesco, Unilever and
Dyson and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.
The new trailers are just 1 to 2.05 metres longer than the longest
vehicles currently operating on UK roads, yet the benefits are
impressive, including up to 15 per cent increased average load
capacity. Wincanton has received 68 licences from the Department
for Transport.
Dave Rowlands, Technical Services Director at Wincanton says: “The
trial LST licences have been hugely oversubscribed and this just
shows what an important addition to the UK fleet portfolio this will
be to reduce costs, reduce carbon and cut congestion. We are now
working with our customers to allocate the licences and make sure
that we can get the benefits of the trial in improved efficiency.
Wincanton’s prototype 15.65m longer semi-trailer has now passed
its DfT/VCA performance test and we have got the green light for
all subsequent trailers of the same design. The vehicle took its first
fee-paying load onto the road on Monday 6 February 2012.
