Drax wouldn't be first, they had converted thermal stations coal to gas in the 70s. It was only built for the Selby coal field, which I understand has ceased production. In additional to thermal, gas can power turbine generation, which has a short lead-in time and so is complementary to wind power which fluctuates. It also saves energy and co2, since a thermal station doesn't need to be on standby for the commercials in Corrie. Truly this gas is in the right place: yes I know we have a grid. Oil terminals too!
