RE: Afc very interesting information divulged by Adam Bond in interview with Proactive investor.30 Mar 2021 21:15
I work in Rail. All the AT300 platforms have the ability to remove the Genetator Units and operate as full electric OR an alternative 'cleaner' generator. HS2 will be electric 100% for several reasons, so let's end rumours or speculation there. I do know of a ROSCO who are investigating hydrogen for the AT300 platform and given Ricardos consultancy links in rail, well you never know. For a hybrid train what would be good is using the electrified part of the rail journey to power the train and make hydrogen for the unelectrified parts of the network. You could have these in terminal stations on branch lines too. This approach makes more sense to me and removes the need for hydrogen refueling, storage and the network. Less losses through thermal degradation too as you only make want you need for the next part of the journey. I also know of other older trains that are trying the hydrogen concept but the AFC tech might have some advantages as stated above. Electrification costs around £1 million a mile for plus maintenance, so for branch lines a hybrid train is the perfect solution.
Anyway, back to my flask of cold coffee and camera ;-)
