To date, 16 deposits have been discovered and a total of 27 million tons of oil and more than 3 billion cubic meters of gas have been extracted. These deposits were discovered back in the Soviet period, and now about 5 million tons of oil and 4-5 billion cubic meters of gas remain to be extracted from these deposits.
According to economist Soso Simonishvili, some gas reserves were discovered on the Black Sea shelf after the 90s of the last century, but then the country could not organize their use due to clan conflicts, which ultimately affected the country.
"Georgia was a pioneer in the discovery and research of natural gas deposits on the Black Sea shelf. The start of research in this direction is connected with the activity of scientist Shota Mestvirishvili. Around 1995-1997, he discovered that there were certain gas reserves in the territory of the Black Sea, decided to organize an expedition, to find a ship with special equipment, the equipment of which was created by the scientist himself. Then it was said that there is a huge deposit in the vicinity of Batumi, of very high quality, with hydrogen admixture, which makes it even more noble. A lot was written in the press at that time, but finally there was a confrontation between the Shevardnadze and Abashidze clans. Although the Anadarko company continued its research, the case was affected by the controversy.
I can't say that we can't use the resource, but there is a big shortage of professionals, which hinders us in many things, this happens in general in the direction of ore extraction, we can't use the dovlat, which actually exists, at this time it is a huge source of wealth in the country", Simonishvili told Business-Resonance. ".
According to the economist, there is a large gas reserve in the region, which requires serious organization, which is a big problem.
"Gas deposits have been found in many places on the Black Sea shelf, among them the Ukrainians were able to start extracting gas near Crimea (which was a part of Ukraine at the time). Later, when this area was taken over by Russia, we remember that the Ukrainian media wrote that Russian warships were hiding in the shadow of the well. There are also great resources in Abkhazia, in Turkey itself, I can't say anything for sure about oil, although where there is gas, there can be oil, it needs a lot of organization," added Soso Simonishvili.
As for Turkey, the Turkish agency "Anadolu" reported on December 26, 2022 that 58 billion cubic meters of natural gas reserves were discovered in the Chayjuma 1 field at a depth of 3023 meters. Accordingly, Turkey's gas reserves in the Black Sea reached 710 billion cubic meters.
Next year, they plan to increase oil production in the neighboring country - from 80,000 barrels to 100,000 barrels per day. According to President Erdogan, Turkey's ultimate goal is to gain energy independence and turn the Caspian Sea, the Mediterranean Sea, and the Middle East into an energy center.
