"You could say Richard Shemesian was born to combine mining and finance.
He is the son of a mining and construction contractor who took up prospecting when he saw mineralisation in the Pilbara hills whilst building mines and infrastructure in the North West in the 1960's.
Richard grew up knee deep in his father’s mining prospectuses and spent his school holidays working in various mines in the across WA.
After graduating with Commerce/Law qualifications at UWA, he went on to work as a solicitor in mining and corporate law and as a corporate adviser at Macquarie Bank. Along the way, he honed his ability to extract value from mining companies and undervalued projects.
In two of his most successful deals, Mt Gibson took over Aztec Resources (market cap $3m) for $300m and then Toronto-listed Mega Uranium took over Redport (market cap $2m) for $125m now part of Toro Energy's WA uranium project.
His company Apollo Minerals has recently joined forces with HPX, a private exploration company controlled by billionaire miner Robert Friedland, to prove up the Gawler Craton in South Australia as a new world class copper-gold frontier.
Already, Apollo's projects are being compared with world class projects.
By combining his skills as a lawyer, corporate adviser and miner, Richard is able to identify key issues, and get a deal across the line.
In the HPX deal, agreements covering 1,500 pages were finalised in just 7 days.
