About the role:
The role of the Laboratory Assistant is to support the high-quality and regulatory compliant clinical services offered by Yourgene Genomic Services and to ensure that the laboratory environment is operating effectively and safely in accordance with instruction provided by the Team Leader.
Responsibilities:
Sample Logistics
Unpacking and receipt of COVID-19 patient samples in line with the regulatory quality and scientific expectations of SARS-CoV-2 testing
Registration of samples on to the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)
To support and service the laboratory functions:
Undertake laboratory tasks as assigned
Coordinate removal of hazardous waste from laboratory areas
Removal and disposal of cardboard waste from storerooms and laboratory areas
Collection of used glassware and plasticware from laboratories
Autoclaving laboratory reagents/solutions, glassware and plastic ware
Cleaning and essential maintenance of washroom equipment
Quality
To carry out all activities in accordance with the relevant quality standard
To liaise with the Quality Department and be familiar with the Quality Manual to ensure correct documentation and SOPs are in place and report non-conformances to ensure continual improvement
To comply with all health and safety and COSHH systems
Communication
To communicate effectively, professionally, and promptly so that all relevant information is forwarded to the appropriate personnel on a regular and timely basis
To participate in internal meetings, visits, and audits as and when appropriate and communicate any information back to the appropriate personnel
Other
To undertake any other task that may be reasonably asked by the management which is consistent with the skill base or previous employment history of the employee
Working environment:
You will be based in our fantastic modern laboratory located in Central Manchester with some elements of office work and administration.
Working Hours:
Week 1 - 0600 to 1400 Monday to Friday
Week 2 - 1200 to 2200 Tuesday to Friday and 0900 to 1700 on Saturday
About you:
Ideally educated to degree level in a life sciences discipline with qPCR laboratory experience is highly desirable
Candidates with GCSE/A-Level qualifications in a science related subject with strong qPCR laboratory experience will be considered
Basic computer skills
Good knowledge of Microsoft Office including Excel
Excellent communication skills
Organised
Enjoy working in a fast-paced environment
Flexible attitude to work
