Article - seems to be a Ukrainian-focused opinion piece on FRR
"Georgia and the United States may quarrel over Russian influence"
"In July 2017, Arseniy Yatsenyuk announced the signing of a memorandum between Ukraine and the European division of American companies Frontera Resources Corporation and Riverstone. The first was to build an LNG terminal for liquefied gas in Ukraine, and the second was to "increase gas purchases for Ukrainian industry."
Frontera Resources Corporation, an international gas and oil exploration and production company, was founded in 1996. The company's strategy is to find prospects for hydrocarbon production in Eastern Europe, which belong to the Black Sea basin.
At that time, it had been present in Georgia since 1997 and was active in investing in the gas sector.
A little later, Yuriy Vitrenko, Naftogaz's director of development, who is currently being fired, said that Frontera could rent a floating gas reception terminal instead of building a stationary terminal in Ukraine.
Even later, Frontera competed with Trident Acquisitions (whose interests in Ukraine were partly represented by former Russian MP Ilya Ponomarev) for the development of the Dolphin oil field on the Ukrainian Black Sea shelf, and even sued the Ministry of Energy to appeal the results of the tender.
At the end of April, it became known that the State Oil and Gas Agency of Georgia (SAOG) had begun the procedure of terminating the contract with Frontera Resources, with which it had been cooperating for 25 years.
The arbitral tribunal upheld the Georgian Oil and Gas Corporation (GOGC) and SAOG for violating Frontera Resources Georgia Corporation's agreement by refusing to return the explored areas of the licensed field to the state. The Georgian side appealed to the International Court of Arbitration (IAS) in January 2018. The dispute concerned the distribution of extracted oil under a 1997 contract.
Frontera, in turn, accused the Georgian government of spreading false information about the results of the arbitration dispute.
In response, Republican senators Ted Cruz and John Cornin, congressmen Judy Arrington and Markway Malin sent a letter to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Treasury Secretary Stephen Mnuchin last week demanding an assessment of US business security. Georgia and Bidzina Ivanishvili's ties with Russia and Iran.
In the letter, senators and congressmen emphasize that they are concerned about "Georgia's illegal financial ties with US competitors and enemies, including Iran," which threatens the national US security.
In addition, Russian FSB-related resources have joined the scandal, actively spreading the position of representatives of the Georgian ruling Georgian Dream party.
I wonder how this will affect Frontera's position in the oil and gas sector of Ukraine?"
