Nickel is becoming a critical metal .....

‘Fitch’s mining team experts expect higher battery metal prices will benefit miners from a lag in raw materials project development while putting automakers at a disadvantage. The analyst notes at current prices, the initial increase in mining investment will be inadequate to match the acceleration of demand which would increase the price of batteries and thus create a highly competitive market for nickel supplies.

I take from it that ‘All Mines Matter’ we are going to need a massive amount of nickel supply to satisfy all the applications of nickel once electric batteries start taking a larger and larger chunk of the market.

Vale bought the above in 2005 and Iguess they reckoned they had enough nickel for their needs. Obviously they did not foresee the EV revolution. It was also rumoured that that they had annoyed the locals and saw little chance of getting the necessary permits easily.

They spent $200 million on Vermelho before they sold it to Horizonte, so they must have thought it had prospects as a mine.

Thanks Tricky, it only cost them $8 million, so easy come easy go.

No large sulphide deposits left - will be demand for laterite supplies independent of China - EV demand only 5% at present that will flip somewhat mid decade - EV makers will try and lock in supplies - price of nickel not quite there to incentivise many mines - many new mines won’t be ready until 2030’s - green supply of nickel needed etc.

Plus I read somewhere Brazil expects to get herd immunity (via vaccines) in the autumn, even before the EU, so pretty positive for our nickel prospects.
