In Part 1 of our hVIVO briefing series, we outlined the strategic and structural drivers supporting long-term value creation.

In this second note, we examine the financial mechanics underpinning our view that hVIVO could achieve a £500m valuation within a three-to-five-year timeframe.

I’d rather not say where this came from but it’s fair to say I bought more after seeing it. Redacted a fair bit so exclude any names. The next two parts are as lengthy as the first!

In Part 2, we will present our detailed financial model, including revenue scaling assumptions, margin expansion dynamics, and discounted cash flow valuation framework supporting the £500m thesis.

In our view, hVIVO sits at the convergence of three durable growth themes:

• Vaccine innovation

Few listed companies offer pure-play exposure to human challenge trials, reinforcing scarcity value within public markets.

Five Early Indicators of Scale Success

Investors should monitor the following leading indicators:

Quarantine bed utilisation rates

Contract backlog growth

Repeat pharma sponsor activity

Average study value increases

New pathogen model approvals

Positive momentum across these metrics would support valuation expansion.

Pathogen Model Platform Strategy-

A key driver of repeat revenue is the development of validated challenge models.

These include:

• Influenza

• RSV

• SARS-CoV-2

• Malaria

Once validated, these models become reusable commercial assets. Sponsors can licence access to run multiple studies, accelerating study initiation and improving margins.

Each new pathogen model expands addressable market size.

Commercial Validation Post-COVID-

The pandemic served as a proof-of-concept moment for the business.

COVID challenge trials demonstrated:

• Regulatory trust

• Scientific capability

• Global sponsor relevance

• Rapid study execution

This repositioned hVIVO as a pandemic-grade research partner rather than a niche influenza provider.

The reputational impact continues to support business development pipelines.

Capacity Expansion as a Revenue Multiplier-

Unlike traditional CROs that scale linearly with staff, hVIVO’s model scales through facility utilisation.

The company has been expanding its London quarantine bed capacity — effectively increasing the number of concurrent trials it can run.

This creates powerful operating leverage:

• High fixed facility costs

• Low marginal trial cost

• Expanding gross margins as utilisation rises

As bed occupancy moves toward 75–85%, EBITDA margins are expected to expand significantly.

Scarcity Value & Barriers to Entry-

One of the most compelling elements of the hVIVO investment case is scarcity.

Globally, there are only a handful of organisations capable of running regulated human challenge trials. Barriers to entry include:

• Specialist quarantine facilities

• Ethical and regulatory approvals

• Pathogen manufacturing capability

• Biosafety containment infrastructure

• Volunteer recruitment databases

• Infectious disease clinical expertise

Replicating this ecosystem requires significant capital investment and multi-year regulatory navigation.

As a result, hVIVO benefits from pricing power, repeat sponsor engagement, and strategic partnership opportunities

Structural Growth in Infectious Disease R&D-

Infectious disease research funding has entered a structural growth phase, driven by several factors:

• COVID-19 variant evolution

• RSV vaccine competition

• Universal influenza vaccine development

• Antimicrobial resistance threats

• Government pandemic preparedness budgets

Human challenge trials offer sponsors faster efficacy signals, smaller sample sizes, and materially lower development costs compared to traditional field trials.

As biotech funding becomes more capital-disciplined, efficient trial design is increasingly prioritised — directly benefiting challenge trial providers.

Executive Investment Thesis

hVIVO occupies a rare and increasingly valuable niche within global clinical research. The company specialises in controlled human infection studies — clinical trials in which healthy volunteers are exposed to pathogens in highly regulated quarantine environments to test vaccines, antivirals, and therapeutics.

While the model has existed for decades, its strategic relevance has accelerated materially following COVID-19. Governments, pharmaceutical companies, and global health bodies now recognise human challenge trials as a critical tool for pandemic preparedness and rapid vaccine development.

This shift has repositioned hVIVO from a niche flu trial provider into a strategic infectious disease infrastructure platform.

We are writing to introduce a three-part investment briefing on hVIVO plc, a UK-listed specialist Contract Research Organisation (CRO) operating at the intersection of infectious disease science, vaccine development, and human challenge clinical trials.

There’s an investment case infront of me saying if T’s are crossed and i’s dotted it could get to £500m 3-5 years.

He bought back late May I think.

Different II’s or cornerstone investors are likely eyeing up HVO given what’s coming. its a good time to buy for them given the SP is super low. March last year there was a blip in the SP (spike) and then the BOD bought after a big drop on bad news. There was something interesting going on.

Always sellers when there’s movement like this but there now zero reasons why the HCC won’t go ahead imo. So the SP will get back to way north of 16p. DYOR.

I don’t think people should consider Mo and Co. Are betting on the companies direction. I think they know. In fact I’m sure they know.

CEO must hate his own money don’t you think?

I don’t think it’s a punt given the FDA change of rules making HCT’s a huge cost saving for developers. I believe the BOD know why they are backing this horse with large amounts of their capital. I get my own advice regarding my Biotech investments and trust my advisor. I actually look forward to the drop in SP knowing it’s a very good investment and will keep buying if it drops.
