Airbus, Boeing expected to turn to hybrid engine technology for new planes – lessor
"CHICAGO, Nov 19 (Reuters) – Airbus SE and Boeing Co are expected to turn to hybrid electric technology when they develop the next generation of airplanes because of limits on improving current engines, the head of a major aircraft lessor said on Thursday.
Airbus is already working hard on a hybrid solution but Boeing is likely to be more cautious about making a major investment in a new program given its challenges with the return of the 737 MAX and certification of the 777X, Air Lease Corp Chief Executive Steven Udvar-Hazy said at the Skift Aviation Forum.
"I have serious doubts that either Boeing or Airbus can design an all new airplane using current aerodynamic engine technologies that can have a meaningful – let's call it double-digit advantage over what we already have," he said in reference to fuel efficiency. "So what I see evolving is more of a hybrid." Udvar-Hazy said hybrid engines would allow for a lighter aircraft weight, as well as a technology transition rather than a step change.
"Almost like we didn't go from all piston engine and diesel cars to all electric cars," he said. "There's that transition with hybrids that have a smaller gasoline engine and then an electric augmentation engine, like the Prius for the example." Airbus said last year it was considering producing a hybrid plane by 2035 as it strives for a low-emission aircraft, while Rolls-Royce Holdings PLC said in March it expected hybrid planes carrying around 100 people to be flying commercially by 2029"
Rolls-Royce To Begin Unblended SAF Tests

"With the intense focus of the aviation industry on the lowering of its carbon footprint, Rolls-Royce is looking ahead to the day when sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) becomes more widely available and will begin exploring the use of 100 percent SAF on one of its engines this week.
The powerplant maker will conduct ground testing with one of its Trent engines on a stand at its Derby, UK test facility, using SAF produced by World Energy in California and delivered by SkyNRG.
The program is aimed at determining how the company’s current engine designs operate on “neat” or unblended SAF and what future modifications could benefit them. According to Simon Burr, the company’s director of product development and technology, Rolls-Royce will induct an engine from its Pearl family—which powers the in-flight-test Gulfstream G700 and Bombardier Global 5500 and 6500—into the 100 percent SAF test program in the new year at its Germany location. “I would just say I am less worried about relight and the operability of the engine,” Burr told AIN. “I don’t think those things are a major consideration, it’s mainly the issue of [fuel system] sealing in particular that is the prime anxiety.”
Currently, to be considered a drop-in replacement for standard jet-A and to meet the specification for ASTM D7566, SAF must be blended to ensure the presence of proper amounts of aromatic compounds, which are generally lacking in neat SAF."

"Vaccine is good news for RR
In the past few months, tens of companies have been on a race to develop a Covid-19 vaccine. Some of these companies include AstraZeneca, Pfizer, Novavax, and GlaxoSmithKline, among others. Recently, some of these companies have revealed that their vaccines are more than 90% effective and are now waiting for authorisation by the regulators.
A vaccine will be a good thing for most UK companies because it will mean more travel and less shutdowns. Rolls Royce will be the key beneficiary for all of this. Others are Whitbread, British Airways, Meggitt, and Intercontinental Hotels."
"Rolls Royce share price technical outlook
On the daily chart, we see that Rolls Royce share price has bounced back after falling to a split-adjusted low of 36.75p. In the past few months, the stock has managed to move above the 23.6% Fibonacci retracement level. Notably, the price has also managed to move above the 200-day moving average.
If the trend continues, a golden cross – where the 50-day EMA crosses the 200-day EMA – will soon happen. Therefore, in the near term, I suspect that the bullish trend will continue, with the next target being the 50% retracement at 190p, which is ~65% above the current price. However, a move below the 50-day EMA at 80p will invalidate this trend."
