I actually asked that question in a meeting with Fortune many years ago when we were in the midst of buying Vametco and had a bridging loan with barrack, the bid was 1.25p and we were on the ropes.

More vanadium batteries (and supply chain expansion):
"On 26 September, Shanghai Electric held the "Energy Integration, Smart Future" Enterprise Summit Forum and the theme event of Shanghai Electric's 120th anniversary. Yang Linlin, vice chairman of Shanghai Electric Energy Storage Technology Co., Ltd., said that up to now, Shanghai Electric had had close to 3GWh of orders for vanadium batteries. It has also made breakthroughs in overseas markets such as Japan, Australia, and Europe. More than 50 vanadium battery energy storage projects have been delivered, and the cumulative installed capacity at home and abroad has exceeded 50MWh. The application scenarios cover many application fields, such as wind storage, optical storage, wind storage and microgrid.

In terms of industrialization promotion, Shanghai Electric has completed the industrial layout of the first-phase factory in Hefei, Anhui Province, with an annual output of 1GWh, which will realize the automatic production of vanadium redox flow batteries.

On 13 September 2022, Bushveld Minerals announced interim results for H1 2022. Improvements in financial performance, positive revenue growth, a solid production performance at Vametco, progress on the BELCO plant construction and Vanchem’s Kiln 3 coming onboard, were some of the key achievements highlighted. The company remains confident in achieving a positive H2 and Group production run rate this year.

Bushveld Minerals returned to profitability in the first half of 2022 helped by higher vanadium prices and a steady rise in production.

Revenues jumped to US$76mln from US$47mln as the average ferrovanadium price rose by 35% and production edged up 4%.

The weakness of the South African rand against the US dollar also provided a tailwind on costs, said the miner.

Operating profits in the half year to June 2022 rebounded to US$6.1mln from a loss of US$19.7mln a year ago, while a cash inflow of US$7.1mln represented a US$27mln positive swing. Pre-tax losses were cut to US$1.2mln from US$22.3mln.

Fortune Mojapelo, chief executive, said the positive momentum should continue in the second half of the year though production guidance has been lowered due to kiln commissioning at its Vanchem arm

Group 2022 production is now forecast to be between 3,900 mtV and 4,100 mtV, though Mojapelo still expects the group to hit an annual run rate of 5,000 - 5,400mtV by the year-end.

Construction of the electrolyte manufacturing facility (BELCO) is also now 80% complete, he added, with production expected in the first half of 2023.

Vanadium price as at 16 September 2022 for London Metal Bulletin ferrovanadium was US$30.8/kgV, US$45.2/kgV for CRU Ryan's Notes and US$31.9/kgV for Asian Metals.

Moving on to the vanadium market, during H1 2022 the London Metal Bulletin ("LMB") Ferrovanadium price averaged US$45.0/kgV (H1 2021: US$33.4/kgV), Asian Metals prices Ferrovanadium prices averaged US$37.2/kgV (H1 2021: US$31.8/kgV) and US Ryan's Note prices averaged US$58.5/kgV (H1 2021: US$34.1/kgV).

That shipment realised between $48 to $54 per kg. Depending on the order date.
So how was it produced at a loss?

With payments being delayed by 8 to 12 weeks that consignment will have probably have commanded the early summer US FeV price of $54 per kg.

That's right Pdub here's a bit more info on the specialist BMN have engaged with to bring Vanchem kiln 3 up to speed.
News from Vanchem:
Management changes at Vanchem. GM has been replaced and Les Ford, a V technical specialist (86 years old) but still considered a world expert has been brought in to get kiln 3 stabilised.

Les was the technical director for Largo and built Maracas.

Plus a planned 26 day maintenance stoppage at Vametco and the shut down of kiln 1 at Vanchem and slow commissioning of kiln 3

Revenue will be a lot more in H2 as because of the 6 to 12 weeks delayed payments. H1 interims will have probably included Nov, Dec 21 shipments when the price Fev was a lot weaker,coupled with Dollar v Rand around 16. now 17.66

It's actually the mcap that value's a company not the SP, ie SP x number of shares in issue equal mcap.
