In the middle of the month, all vanadium products rose to relatively high level. The market fell into the gridlock and the transaction volume was small. On the whole, the shortage of supply in vanadium raw materials market has not been effectively alleviated, and the proportion of enterprises resuming production is small. Some enterprises are still waiting for approval for production and those in production are unable to release full capacity. The environmental inspections are still strict in the second half of this year. At present, the inventory volume of ammonium metavanadate is small and is unable to make up the gap of demand.

The Chinese vanadium export market was quiet last week, marked by slow trading on major export market Europe being away for the summer holidays, amid the usual seasonal slowdown, sources said. Still, prices logged an uptick on short supply in China and healthy domestic demand.

Metal Bulletin’s latest assessment for the fob China ferro-vanadium min 78% price was $80-83 per kg on Thursday July 26, up $1 on the low end from $79-83 in the week prior.

“There are not that many export cargoes now from China, as the authorities have deemed it a hazardous material. But prices will stay stable or rise as China doesn’t have much supply now,” a trader said.

Jingye Iron & Steel announces bidding results for vanadium-nitrogen alloy

BEIJING (Asian Metal) 26 Jul 18 – Hebei Jingye Iron & Steel Co., Ltd. completed bidding to purchase 25t of vanadium-nitrogen alloy with the final purchasing price of RMB420,000/t (USD80.64/kg V) delivered D/P, up by RMB10,000/t (USD1.92/kg V) from last purchase, which hits the historical high of steel mills’ purchase prices this month, and lays a foundation for vanadium prices to remain at high level.

The company last purchased 10t of vanadium-nitrogen alloy at RMB410,000/t (USD78.72/kg V) delivered D/P on July 3th.

Vanadium buying activity has almost no progress

The high prices and unclear market trend lead the traders to become cautious in procurement even though they have only small quantity of spot cargoes. Most market participants keep a close eye on steel mills’ bidding prices. But several traders expect the price to go further up as they think the insufficient spot cargoes will continue to drive vanadium prices.

Whereas, some midstream traders think it high-risk to continue operation at highs and some of them who have low or no inventories mostly hold wait-and-see attitude, without confidence about the market. The forthcoming tenders are appealing to market participants.

Vanadium prices have been flat recently,and the stability may continue. The future trend depends on the market supply-demand.
