Italian entrepreneurs who migrated to Stony Brook University’s energy incubator to form an innovative-battery startup are planning to take on the Powerwall of Elon Musk’s Tesla Inc.

Their Stony Brook company, StorEn Technologies, is adapting vanadium-flow batteries — typically the size of shipping containers and found in utility or industrial settings — for light commercial or household use.

StorEn’s battery units, about the size of a large, cylindrical vending machine, could be used as a backup in case of a power outage.

Chief executive Carlo Brovero said the entrepreneurs joined the Clean Energy Business Incubator Program at Stony Brook in 2016 after considering Northeast incubators from Boston to New York City. They founded StorEn the following year.

“It’s very much focused on energy and energy storage,” he said of the university’s incubator program and Advanced Energy Research & Technology Center.

The New York State Pollution Prevention Institute at the Rochester Institute of Technology and other partners are testing a StorEn prototype battery at the energy center to “validate” the technology, said David C. Hamilton, executive director of SBU’s program and director of operations at the center.

The testing program is expected to help StorEn raise funds for additional development and marketing.

StorEn has raised $659,824 through a now-closed crowdfunding effort on startengine.com, and Brovero said the company is in talks with additional unnamed investors, including some on Long Island

Chinese ferro-vanadium exporters continued to raise their offer levels last week after prices were bolstered by strength in the country’s domestic market, while the European ferro-vanadium market tumbled amid sluggish spot activity.

Fastmarkets assessed the export price for ferro-vanadium, min 78%, fob China, at $74-76 per kg on February 21, up by 3.1% from $70.50-75 per kg a week earlier.

Many Chinese ferro-vanadium exporters raised their offer prices last week despite sparse inquiries from abroad after realizing that equivalent prices in the domestic spot market were close to or in some instances had even surpassed their export levels, Fastmarkets understands.

“It’s really strange that we did not receive many inquiries this week since there should be a round of restocking from overseas market after the week-long Lunar New Year holiday (February 4-10). But there is no way for us to surrender too much on our offer price due to the appreciation in the yuan and rising domestic spot prices,” a Chinese ferro-vanadium exporter said on February 21.

“The export market has not been as attractive as what it was in the past few weeks. Since we do not have many stocks at hand, there is no hurry to selling [in the export market]. If we fail to conclude any deals there, we will turn to the domestic market where the price is not too bad now,” the exporter added.

Some domestic steel mills in China raised their March tender prices for ferro-vanadium last week, which buoyed sentiment in the country’s domestic market, sources said.

Despite the bullish market sentiment prevailing in the domestic market, many market participants believe this round of price rise would be much reasonable.

South Africa pledges $4.9 billion Eskom bailout

South Africa’s struggling state-owned monopoly power utility company, Eskom is set to receive a bailout.

The debt-laden firm will receive 4.9 billion US dollars, the biggest bailout in the nation’s history after the government stepped in to prevent its collapse.

According to Finance Minister Tito Mboweni, the emergency funds will be meted out over three years.

“We are setting aside 23 billion rand a year to financially support Eskom during its reconfiguration. The fiscal support, this is very important, is conditional on the appointment of an independent chief reorganization officer, who will be jointly appointed by the minister of finance and the minister of public enterprises,” said Mboweni.

Just had a text to post what happened the other night.
So a bit of a heads up for all you pub quizers.
Myself and my brother were in a pub quiz which attracts a lot of entrants because of a cash prize determined on the number of entry fees, and the place was well packed. You know the format, 30 questions, 25 which aren't that difficult and 5 which you would have to question your life to answer correctly
Anyway we were in with a great chance of winning, feeling confident and thinking about drinking free alnight only to have our dreams shattered on hearing the result that we were only runners up
