Hard to believe that someone on an investors board could come out with that.
So if Lloyds purchased £2 Billion of shares in each of the next 10 years , the share price would have collapsed from the current 43p per share.

If the market cap remains constant whilst a share purchase programme takes place, the price per share will increase.
Currently the market cap is lower than when the 2022 programme started.

Anyone who calls themselves an investor should be aware of the market worth of a business (market cap) . Personally as an investor I know the market worth to be about £29 Billion against which I can measure if buying into yearly underlying profitability of 7 to 8 Billions pounds is worthwhile.

Only one observation is necessary and it was very easy - the share count is getting on for a Billion fewer than in 2010 despite only having less than 3 years of buyback programmes.

The price per share of a company does not indicate by itself the market valuation of the business.
If investors thought Lloyds was undervalued at £28 Billion (the market knows how many shares are in issue), then buying pressure would increase the market cap and thereby increasing the price per share.

Lloyds have not been conducting buybacks every year since 2010.
Nevertheless with less than 3 years of buybacks the share count is about a billion less than in 2010
