Many people would prefer to spend the money instead on stocks and shares giving high dividend yields that could pay for all of an electricity bill from centralised generation points feeding into the grid.

Shares can be kept and passed on to children and have value forever.

Many would have invested in Lloyds shares and others to secure extra retirement income rather than spend every penny they had on f ags, booze, and holidays etc etc etc in their lifetime, it is the latter people who are still likely to get rewarded for getting rid of most of their money.

Maybe next people such as yourself will be saying that the sort of people who have invested and now with a 'wedge' of shares doesn't need the handout of a state pension ? - can you see where the slippery slope can end up?.
