The subsequent share price recovery indicates how wrong investors were. Most importantly, investors need to remember that Hogg works on a fee basis and not commission, and the fee is not influenced by whether an executive flies first class or economy. In some circumstances, clients want fewer services when trading conditions are tough, but many of its blue chip customers have been clients for more than 10 years, sign three- to five-year contracts and client retention remains at over 90 per cent. So what Hogg has been experiencing is a trim in demand not a capsize, and it has responded by cutting employee numbers (two-thirds of costs) by 10 per cent in late 2008.
