Banks stand accused of 'filling their boots' ahead of new rules meant to give savers a better deal.

Lenders are under fire for not extending a series of rate rises to savings accounts while ramping up mortgage and other borrowing costs, leading to bumper profits.

The six biggest lenders last year made £44 billion in net interest – the difference between what they pay savers and charge borrowers. That was £8 billion more than in 2021 when rates were almost at zero

In February, Lloyds announced a £2bn buyback. When a company removes shares in issue through a buyback, its market value goes down. Usually, I’d expect the share price to go up to compensate.

As of now, the buyback is 81% complete. Around 3.5bn shares have been taken out of circulation, and yet, the Lloyds share price hasn’t risen. In fact, it fell around 12%. This tells me that investors are seeing big risks here

Average asking rents in London have hit record highs of £2,567 per month, new data shows, with tenants in the capital now paying a third more than they were pre-pandemic.

Renters in the capital are forking out £559 more every month compared to the same period in 2019, a new study by Rightmove shows, as demand and cost pressures on landlords drive up prices

Retail sales grew 0.7% last month beating expectations, latest official data shows.

It follows a rise of 0.1% in May, a figure which the Office for National Statistics had revised down from 0.3%.

Experts had forecast a rise of 0.2% in June, according to an average supplied by Pantheon Macroeconomics.
