British Airways has warned staff that wage costs will be a “serious” problem when the furlough scheme comes to an end next month.

The airline said it’s likely to be a temporary problem but one “we need to manage".

"We're going to have to be as flexible as possible when it comes to the way we work, to help mitigate the situation over the coming months,” it said in a memo seen by the BBC.

"We are in discussions with your trade union representatives, who are as keen as we are to find a way through the winter season and into growth next year."

SYDNEY, Aug 27 (Reuters) - British-based digital banking app Revolut is seeking a banking licence in Australia and is engaged in talks with the country's regulator to be allowed to take customer deposits, country head Matt Baxby said on Friday.

Revolut, one of the most valuable fintech so-called unicorns worldwide, last year obtained a financial licence for its subsidiary in Australia and is registered with the anti-money-laundering agency as digital exchange, the company said.

"Our mission is to directly challenge the incumbent banks that ... offer a suboptimal user experience, and their business models are really quite reliant on customer apathy," Baxby told a parliamentary committee.

LONDON, Aug 27 (Reuters) - Barclays (BARC.L) said on Friday its United States arm will buy a $3.8 billion credit card portfolio co-branded with clothing retailer The Gap Inc (GPS.N), as the British bank continues a strategy of partnering with big brands to grow in the U.S..

Barclays is buying the portfolio from Synchrony Bank, and the deal is expected to close in the second quarter of next year.

The deal comes at a time when banks worldwide are trying to expand fee-earning businesses such as credit cards, amid rock-bottom central bank interest rates that have squashed profits from their other main business of lending.

Payments using contactless cards surged as the UK emerged from lockdowns and consumers started spending again.

The number of purchases made in May via contactless technology doubled compared with the same month a year earlier, and was up 50% on May 2019.

Some 65% of purchases on debit cards were made in this way.

Many retailers have encouraged shoppers to pay via contactless cards during the pandemic, hoping it protects staff from close contact with customers.
