The £4.3bn of Covid loans that may have to be written-off by The Treasury due to fraud and highlighted by the recent resignation of Lord Agnew, could be eclipsed by businesses failing to repay their CBILs and BBLs Covid support loans, an industry expert warns.

£73.8bn has been loaned under the above schemes to around a quarter of UK businesses by banks, building societies and other accredited lenders, Duncan Swift, a restructuring and insolvency partner with Azets in London pointed out.

This includes more than 1.5m Bounce Back Loans, worth £47.4bn, where businesses were provided with a loan of up to £50,000, or a maximum of 25 per cent of annual turnover, with the government guaranteeing the repayments.

The UK is lagging behind several other major European nations on the delivery of new-builds, in relation to its population size, analysis has found.

The UK new-build sector delivered 175,180 new homes to market in 2020, Unlatch, a b2b software company for property developers, said.
This was well behind Germany, where 306,400 new homes were built and France, which marked the completion of 381,600 new-builds.
However, the UK exceeded the delivery of other countries, including Spain (77,500), the Netherlands (69,300), Belgium (62,700), Italy (49,100) and Portugal (17,300).
In relation to the population size of each nation, the UK delivered one of the lowest levels of new stock, with 261 homes built for every 100,000 people.

The cost of living crisis and Omicron will hit UK economic growth this year, according to forecasts.

The EY ITEM Club predicts that gross domestic product (GDP) will grow by 4.9 per cent in 2022, down from predictions of 5.6 per cent.

Omicron's impact at the start of the year and the expected squeeze on house hold incomes were 'key' to the downgrade.

Analysts also expected inflation to surge to nearly 7 per cent in the spring.

Martin Beck, chief economic adviser to the EY ITEM Club, said: 'Households will benefit from government help on energy, but [it] will not fully offset the squeeze on household incomes.'
