Gross profit increased by 21% year-on-year to £102m (Q1 2022: £84m), with gross margin of 34% (Q1 2022: 36%). The increase in gross profit was primarily driven by favourable mix and higher volumes of core models, partially offset by higher manufacturing, logistics and other costs.

• Statutory profit after tax of £1.6 billion (three months to 31 March 2022: £1.1 billion), with higher net income, partly offset by expected higher operating costs. Strong return on tangible equity of 19.1 per cent

• Underlying net interest income up 20 per cent, primarily driven by a stronger banking net interest margin of 3.22 per cent in the three months to 31 March 2023, stable on the fourth quarter of 2022, and increased average interest-earning assets

Stocks reversed across the board this afternoon, leaving the FTSE 100 to finish well under water at 7,703 points for a 1.2% loss.

Ahead of the Fed policy decision later in the day, Lloyds Banking Group PLC (LSE:LLOY) wraps up the FTSE 100 bank reporting season this coming Wednesday, with its shares having dropped 2.5% in the week running up to the release as investors digest numbers from its peers.

Like many of its peers, the bank’s management warned they expect interest margins to drop in the first quarter, but analysts reckon this was conservative and some are also seeing scope for buybacks.

LONDON, May 2 (Reuters) - The Bank of England is weighing up whether to raise interest rates for the 12th meeting in a row next week as it continues to grapple with an inflation rate that remains above 10%, higher than in any other big, rich economy.

Investors think it is a near-certainty that the BoE will announce a quarter-percentage point increase in Bank Rate, taking it to 4.5%, on May 11. They also see a roughly 50% chance of borrowing costs hitting 5% by August.

Budget airline Wizz Air has seen its losses widen dramatically as the company was forced to book a multimillion-euro charge because of the soaring US dollar.

LONDON (Reuters) - British factory output and new orders contracted at the start of the second quarter of 2023, but manufacturers were more optimistic and input costs rose at the weakest rate since May 2020, an industry survey showed on Tuesday.

The final S&P Global/CIPS UK manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) fell to a three-month low of 47.8 in April from 47.9 in March, still below the 50 threshold for growth though higher than the provisional, "flash" reading of 46.6.
