Sports Direct board members have discussed a possible merger between Debenhams and House of Fraser, a company director has revealed.

Outgoing senior non-executive director Simon Bentley said at the Sports Direct general meeting that a combination had “been discussed”.

He added that the company still has its “hands full” with integrating House of Fraser, which Sports Direct acquired out of administration last month.

Sports Direct owns just under 30% of Debenhams, close to the threshold at which it must launch an official takeover bid. Analysts have previously suggested the two department stores should combine to cut costs.

StoneChecker still on track for FDA clearance and commercial roll out of software

Nick Stevens, chief executive of StoneChecker, which is part of the Flying Brands group (LON:FDBU) tells Proactive's Andrew Scott that despite a small delay in the US FDA clearance process, they're still looking at a commercial roll out in Q4 this year.

Once approved, the group aims to launch the software in the US, India and China by the end of the year while commercial sales in the UK are expected to begin in the fourth quarter.

StoneChecker received European CE clearance last December.

Update on Trading

Toople Plc (LSE: TOOP), a provider of bespoke telecom services to UK SMEs, today gives the following update on trading.

The Board is pleased to report that during the three months since 31 March 2018 the Company has made significant operational progress across a number of key areas within the business. The Company has achieved a number of new contract wins which are performing well and driving revenue growth. Total orders received across the business during the period were up 218% when compared to the same period in 2017.

Total revenues in the quarter grew by 27.2% when compared to 2017. During the period, gross margins also improved to 14.76% (2017: 11.95%) and within the retail division this was even higher at 23.7% (2017: 17.6%). Overall this has resulted in gross profit growth of 57.1% when compared to the corresponding period last year.

Andy Hollingworth, CEO of Toople commented:

"We have worked hard to put in place new operational structures across the business and this has started to bear fruit with orders and total revenues up significantly when compared with the same period last year. Importantly margins and gross profit are also improving. We have won a number of significant new contracts and early indications about their success are very encouraging as revenue continues to grow. Extended well testing at the Horse Hill-1 ("HH-1") site is underway as announced on 27 June 2018 with work initially focussing on the Portland Sandstone where Solo believes that the reservoir, productive elsewhere in the Weald Basin, has a high chance of producing oil at commercial rates. Additional information is expected to follow from the operator, Horse Hill Developments Limited ("HHDL"), in due course. The Company holds a 9.75% beneficial interest in licences PEDL137 and PEDL246 containing the HH-1 oil discovery through its 15% shareholding in HHDL.
