@ loudspeaker, thanks for the equations explanation and the conclusion that 8 million litres does indeed relate to the plans for an initial 200mwh annual output.

I realise they company have said they have the intention and ability within the initial construction design to install the wherewithal for an increase in the initial production capacity if future orders justly it, but I do not see how you tie a 800mwh annualised production capacity straight into into what this report had stated.

Any increase of that order would need increased cap-ex and contracts signed and sealed in order to justify it … which they would surly have to notify the market about?

We now know that the East London plant is not expected to ramp up to its initial total output capacity of 8 million litres of electrolyte per annum until March 2023.

Does that 8 million litres also equate to their 200MWh annual production target?

@ knutsfordnotary, yep this is indeed a very important piece of news for the steel industry with the resultant knock on effect of underpinning market confidence in sales from the mining side of the business.
Imo, this news will provide a stable platform which should see the sp starting to make some real gains from now on.

The Long Duration Energy Storage Council was formed on Thursday with 25 members including Bill Gates’ Breakthrough Energy Ventures, BP and Siemens Energy. It forecasts that 1.5-2.5 terawatts of capacity, capable of storing about 10 per cent of global electricity demand, could be installed by 2040.

Supporters say long duration energy storage or LDES — defined as systems capable of storing energy for more than eight hours — will be pivotal as the world replaces fossil fuels with less predictable wind and solar power.

“This area of long duration storage is the next topic that people really need to grasp to achieve this net zero future,” Phil Caldwell, chief executive of UK-listed Ceres Power and a founding member of the council, told the Financial Times.

Oil and gas-fired power stations can be turned up or down to respond to peaks and troughs in electricity demand. Wind and solar power, however, depend on daylight and weather conditions, meaning cost effective systems to store renewable energy will be needed to balance demand on the future grid.

According to the LDES Council, about $3bn has been invested in storage technology providers in the past five years. But at least 1 terawatt hour of long duration storage is required by 2025 at a cost of $50bn if the global power sector is to be on course to decarbonise by 2040, it said.

The main source of long duration energy storage today is pumped hydro, where water is pushed from a lower elevation reservoir to a higher elevation and then released, generating clean power when it is needed.

Other technologies under different stages of development by the group’s members include electrochemical flow and hybrid batteries and thermal processes where materials such as molten salt are heated. Ceres is developing a chemical system that would store power in the form of hydrogen.

“This council is technology-agnostic,” said Caldwell. “There is not one single solution to this but energy storage, in whatever form that takes, is going to be needed.”

The carbon impact of widespread storage solutions would be significant. Displacing the fossil fuels currently used to balance demand with 85-140 terawatt hours of stored renewable power by 2040 would eliminate up to 2.3 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide emissions a year, equivalent to 15 per cent of the power sector’s current total emissions, the LDES Council said.

In addition to sharing ideas between members, the group aims to provide guidance to governments and grid operators on the deployment of specific energy storage solutions for specific applications. Other members include US utility the New York Power Authority, mining group Rio Tinto and industrial services company Baker Hughes.

Today at COP26 in Glasgow, UK, Alfa Laval announced its participation in the Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES) Council. Formed by technology companies, users and investors to achieve grid net-zero by 2040, the council will support governments, grid operators and major electricity users in adopting the most cost-effective energy storage solutions to replace the use of fossil fuels.

To achieve decarbonization, significant efforts must be made to reduce emissions across all sectors. The power sector, which accounts for roughly one-third of global emissions, is central to global decarbonization and will need to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040. Long duration energy storage can cost-effectively store electricity from wind, solar and other renewable sources and then make it available when needed. (Lithium-ion batteries offer an alternate solution but become too expensive for storage durations beyond eight hours.).

The LDES Council was established by 25 founder members including Alfa Laval, BP, Breakthrough Energy Ventures, ESS Inc and Siemens Energy. On November 23, 2021, the LDES Council will publish its first annual report on the need for long duration energy storage in order to reach net-zero carbon emissions.

The Board of Directors of the African Development Bank has approved a $57.67 million loan to Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd, South Africa’s public electricity utility—and Africa’s largest— to harness battery storage technology that will increase electricity generation from reliable and efficient renewable energy sources.

The Bank’s financing, a concessional loan, will come from the Clean Technology Fund, a multi-donor trust fund under the Climate Investment Funds. The pioneering Battery Energy Storage Systems Project is being co-financed with the World Bank and the New Development Bank.

The project involves the development of 200MW of battery storage with four hours of energy storage capacity per day, or 800MW in total, at seven sites in South Africa’s Western Cape, Northern Cape, Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal provinces.

Once onstream, Eskom will be able to dispatch electricity sourced from variable renewable energy that would otherwise have been wasted, reducing reliance on fossil fuel-generated electricity at peak times of the day.

The African Development Bank’s Acting Director for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency, Dr. Daniel Schroth, said: “The approval of the Climate Technology Fund facility reflects the African Development Bank’s strong commitment to support South Africa’s Just Energy Transition plans, prioritizing investment in new low-carbon generation capacity and new technologies such as battery storage. This comes at a critical moment as the world is gearing up for action at COP26.”

The large utility-scale battery storage project, the first of its kind in Africa, is expected to contribute to a reduction in CO2 emissions of as much as 0.292 million tons. It will also inform the rollout of similar projects across the continent. Many African countries are implementing an energy transition as they strive to meet net zero emissions targets.

The project also contributes to South Africa’s ambitious Nationally Determined Contribution, part of compliance with the Paris climate agreement.

The $5.4 billion Clean Technology Fund promotes low-carbon technologies with significant potential to reduce long-term greenhouse gas emissions. The African Development Bank has been an implementing entity of the Climate Investment Funds since 2010.

@aisee. dunno about groups banding together, but most experienced large - ish LTH’s in any company also have active trading pots. Nothing wrong with having a way of increasing your holdings by selling substantial chunks into the rises and buying more back on the lows. It’s a full time job but you have to have the wherewithal to afford it and a complete understanding of the risks. Make no mistake there are many on here and all other bb’s who have that wherewithal …. and perfectly understand how to increase their wealth.

Its a ‘work at home’ job for many professional full time private investors, and there are many eho post on these bb’s. Do not underestimate the professionalism of most posters on these bb’s. They are experts in the professional private investor field!

it’s a practice for experienced PI’s who understand the risk/reward criteria and can afford to do it, especially in the AiM swamp! it’s certainly not for inexperienced novices … who should stick their hard earned in trust funds.

Do not listen to those who very plausibly make the case to say they are posting and giving out info for the benefit of novice investors. They only have one thing in mind and that’s increasing their own wealth. Nothing wrong with that either!

@getbusy, it may deter a few inexperienced investors but imo this small short position will have a relatively insubstantial overall effect on sp. Many companies, large and small, carry some low level short positions along with them.

Yes Ben, I believe the company have previously made there views on this clear, the published short is insignificant, as is quite the case with many companies, it’s normal insti benign practise to have a small short position to be kept as a hedge, imo, this short has nothing whatsoever to do with the sp level. In all probability, even if the sp drifts or even shoots up on substantial news, the short will probably still be in evidence. The short, as IR have implied, is not a great concern, and there is nothing on record of them being in anyway pro-actively aggressive. Also BMN is not actually an illiquid stock.

However we do seem to have a large seller using a buy /sell repeat trading practise, primarily responsible for the sp being unable to break out from its current trading range.

@James0309, I thinks it’s more than probable that the original Dufreco deal specifically excluded the normal ‘buy now but but not allowed to sell for 6 month’ clause due to FM being fully on board with Dufreco intentions to raise funds for it’s major €180 million Steel plant project in San Zeno Naviglio, Italy

I know I posted on this subject at the time and right or wrongly I’ve long believed that FM is fully behind and fully aware of Dufreco’s intentions and all its all part of an arrangement that could well end up meaning Dufreco will become BMN/BE’s first major commercial customer announcement for V, batteries and the leasing of electrolyte.

Dureco’s new plant is planned to be 100% powered by green energy systems and its sure to need some heavy lifting type batteries to run the place, quite apart from the V that’s obviously going to be required in their shiny new steel producing side of the business.

We will have to wait an see if all these underlying and ongoing current negotiations are all part of a continuing ‘scratch my back and I’ll scratch’ yours deal.

Of course something like this … would be considered highly commercially privileged info.

Energy Superhub Oxford Flow Battery - First Phase Milestone Achieved

Invinity Energy Systems plc (AIM:IES), leading global manufacturer of vanadium flow batteries, is pleased to announce that the 1.7 MWh first phase of the Energy Superhub Oxford (ESO) project's flow battery, is now installed and energized.

Comprising nine Invinity VS3 flow batteries, this first battery cluster has enough capacity to serve the daily electricity needs of over 200 UK households. Energizing this cluster, the first of three that will ultimately deliver a total of over 5 MWh, marks an important milestone in the ongoing commissioning process of what will be the UK's largest flow battery.

Invinity personnel are currently at site making final preparations for the delivery of the second cluster of VS3s, expected in the near term. Invinity is working with its project partners - developer Pivot Power, part of EDF Renewables, global technology company Wärtsilä, battery trading platform Habitat Energy and power electronics supplier Gamesa Electric - to commission the full system in preparation for service delivery to the UK grid.

Updates will be provided as further commissioning milestones are achieved.

This was a comment that a screenshot of a conversation has proved is 100% genuine … and it took place yesterday. How-come then, havenall FM’s public comments and interviews, about his frustrations about market perceptions of BMN as a company as just a miner and his inability to change those perceptions since “a couple of years ago” … been very obviously a load of BS!

The truth is out about the reasons for poor communications and the falsehoods that have been told to cover up the reasons for it, no doubt a damage limitation exercise will now be implemented.

But lack of trust in the market place will be the only result.

Good on Mikhail to set the record straight and good of him to tell shareholders that the answer is in their own hands!

No wonder comms has been so poor. No wonder we don’t even get any chemical plant progression stories or Enerox/IES related news. Despite the “we hear you” claims it’s a direct result of a deliberate decision.

And in direct contravention of FM claiming he’s frustrated by his inability to affect market sentiment that BMN is no longer just a mining company, he’s directly responsible and indeed an instigator of market perceptions of BMN

For Mikhail to put his unhappiness with the situation in the public domain and even go so far to suggest that the power to change it is in the shareholders hands certainly isn’t a sign if loyalty to the cause and doesn’t, imo, send out the signal that all is well in the camp.

Claims that it’s FM himself that’s been behind the efforts to keep the sp so severely depressed may not be so far of the mark after all.

The question is, why? And why would he do this and yet in public interviews, make comments to the contrary?

Ok, first tranche back into #BMN at 9.4p. It may drop a tad lower but we are almost at the Covid March 2020 lows of c. 8.6p and it's massively oversold already. So feels like a good place to scale in from.

But again holding some back in case that low gets tagged.

Photos of construction progression and speculation of future capacity possibilities are all pretty much irrelevant, imo. The 200MWh is an annual production target which isn’t even scheduled to start up till late next year

The plant is being built to THEIR stated timescale …. it allows commissioning to be completed sometime in 3Q NEXT year … and production to meet THEIR current expected ANNUAL demand target of 200mWh is expected to then start up. They have been quite clear about it.

Therefore they cannot be expecting to supply electrolyte for any large individually sized contracts, they cannot do that under this timescale and this initial build/production and annual capacity.

Imo, the plant is aimed at the mini- grid market, NOT any local large BESS or global/foreign contracts. Imo, any ‘wins’ in THAT space, brought in by the IES/Enerox battery assembly/suppliers will be, for the time being, reserved for the main mining business as a supplier only … of the raw material, not ‘home grown’ electrolyte.

Further down the line, maybe 2/3years) battery assembly might be added to the mini-grid mix and maybe then, electrolyte capacity expansion will also be required to meet the growing demands of the wider African continent min- grid market.
