Significant spending under Atkinson, followed by significant spending under Ferguson... the modern equivalent of ‘89 would be United being mid table, with no real success in the previous 20 years, and then going out and buying Van Dyke (Pallister) and Henderson (Ince) but paying a significant premium to reflect wtf would you sign for United...

I seem to remember the same charge being levied against United?
