Is the combination of AI and NHS data a goldmine? 100-million-pound failure

suggests not

There is great interest in the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML)

methods within the general healthcare setting. One of the great beliefs has been that

routinely collected healthcare data may contain useful insights into treatment

effectiveness that could be leveraged to find either new targets or re-purpose existing

drugs. Indeed, one UK company was founded on such a promise in 2018. The company

hired numerous high-profile ML/AI personnel and subsequently raised ~60 million

pounds that year. It then signed numerous contracts with NHS trusts to mine their data

looking for opportunities. It raised a further 40 million pounds and subsequently was

de-listed in 2023 after failing to deliver any opportunity. We will discuss via examples of

NHS data as to why they failed. A key issue with routinely collected NHS data is that

there is no real question in mind when collecting data, this in itself causes numerous

issues such as informative missingness/presence which make it extremely difficult to

draw reliable inferences
