While Churchill was rarely in danger of a German attack, the tension of flying or sailing during World War II made travel planning complex and nerve-wracking for his staff. However, Churchill did experience a perilous flight in January 1942 when he flew home from Bermuda on a Boeing Clipper flying boat. The flight was described as the “Most Daring Flight of the Whole War” and was hunted by the Luftwaffe and the British Royal Air Force.
Churchill was also once involved in an incident where he saw a fighter plane shot down and asked to be taken close to the crash site. He jumped out and walked to the spot with a companion, but firemen had already arrived. Churchill remarked, "I hope to God it isn't a British 'plane!"
