"So why on earth do you want to burn 90% of it?"
Who said that? Not me.
"With 53yrs left till total depletion why go to the cliff edge, when we could develop the technology required to replace it."
Alternative Energy can buy the human race some time. Burn the oil more slowly, but alternative energy is not alternative raw materials needed to make essential things. Human ingenuity will no doubt lessen the effects of Humans without Oil... but neither human ingenuity, nor alternative energy can replace it to the extent where the planet can support 7.5 Billion people and climbing.
The human race won't die out, but I guarantee you the global population will be absolutely decimated when oil becomes very scarce. A combination of Famine, War and Genocide will take over until the planet can support a much loser number of humans.
The only way this changes is if human ingenuity is "so advanced" in the future that we literally find a way to physically move masses of humans off this planet and to other habitable planets outside of our solar system. I think it's possible, but how far away it is with our current technology and understanding of the Universe I don't know... probably hundreds of years away.
On Labour... they make a lot of promises. I simply think they will run out of money before they can do half the things they promise. And I won't vote for them because I'm certain they will not only do nothing about the numbers and "type" of immigrants coming here, but they will do everything in their power to increase the numbers.
I genuinely believe that eventually there will be a civil war in the UK. I don't want it, I have a wife and child to worry about. But the religion which must not be named will cause it eventually.
