Bottled,
I was brought up a Catholic, went to mass every week etc. It's hard to categorise my beliefs now.. I don't believe in any of the gods on this planet. There's been 2700+ gods in human history. The Christian, Muslim, Hindu etc gods are just 3 of those. Most of them are no longer followed, most of their respective religions died out with the people that followed them over time.
I'm essentially Agnostic, I don't know if there is a god or not. I'm certain if there is one it's completely indifferent to whether life on this planet suffers or prospers... there's no rhyme or reason to any of it. It's all totally random. The reason I'm Agnostic and not just straight Atheist is... there are many things in science that seem to point towards design. In Quantum Physics for example there's an experiment called the double slit experiment that has been demonstrated to show an electron can be in two places simultaneously, and the location of the electron is dependent on the conscious observer, indicating our consciousness literally reacts with subatomic particles and can actually influence their behavior. I know it sounds nuts, but it's literally be proven, and no scientist/physicist has ever been able to disprove it. his also indicates there are other dimensions outside of our evolved conscious ability to be able to detect/see/measure.
The big bang did happen, and is still happening, but it violates the First Law of Thermodynamics in that "Energy can neither be created nor destroyed, but it can change forms and flow from one place to another. But the total energy of an isolated system remains constant". This means String theory is probably correct, in that our universe is only one of probably an infinite number of universes, again outside of our highly evolved primate brain's, ability to detect.
If energy can't be created, then the big bang can't come from nothing. It came from somewhere... maybe black holes are entrances to other dimensions containing other universes. Our universe itself has 1 Septillion stars and planets in it. That's a 1 with 24 zero's... or for impact 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000, there are over 150 Billion galaxies. Out galaxy the Milkyway has 500 Billion stars and planets in it. If we could travel at the speed of light (about 629 Million MPH) it would take us 100,000 human years to travel from one end of it to the other.
I think that puts into perspective just how insignificant our spec of dust planet really is. And the human race on it? Next time you reach 40,000 feet in a commercial airliner, and you're flying over land. Look down at human civilization, it resembles a bacteria or mold growth on the face of the earth. We've been on the planet for about 300,000 years... a blink of an eye.
