For those who may not have looked at his CV...
Professor Sir Christopher Evans, OBE
DSc, PhD, BSc, ARCS, F.Med.Sci, FR Eng, FRSC, FRSA, FIBiol, FIOM, CCMI, C.Biol., CSci, C.Chem
Twice elected "Cambridge Businessman of the Year", awarded OBE in 1995, knighted in 2001. Has created over 50 successful science companies from scratch worth over $5billion. He has successfully floated 20 new companies on stock markets around the world.
His businesses have employed over 3500 people, mostly scientists, spending over $300million each year with life sciences suppliers and with an annual salary base in excess of $200million. He built Chiroscience plc with many of his own scientific ideas from scratch with £1.5million in 1992 to over £1billion by 1997 returning huge amounts of cash at over 240% IRR to his original backers (Apax, Schroders, 3i etc). He built Merlin Biosciences in just six years to over $500million investment funds under management into one of the largest European focused biomedical venture capital firms ever: it is now renamed Excalibur.
His companies have developed and launched a diversity of interesting new products and treatments;- world’s first premature infant lung surfactant; one of the safest anaesthetic epidurals; an ultra pure anti-inflammatory; a range of leading dermatology instruments; diabetic leg ulcer device; a range of cancer and HIV diagnostic tests and bioluminescent germ testing kits etc
This COVID-related research project, was arranged and structured by him, through Excalibur Medicines Ltd, which brought together the scientific intellectual property, international funding and a world leading team to drive the project forward. The idea of investigating AZD1656 in this setting was conceived by Professor John Martin and his team at St George Street.
Professor Evans and the Excalibur team having sourced investment from Mubadala of Abu Dhabi, one of the world’s leading sovereign wealth funds, Excalibur itself and several high net worth individuals. This is in addition to funding secured from the UK Government through the UKRI / Innovate UK programme.
Professor John Martin, Chairman of the charity and Principal Investigator on the grant awarded by UKRI, said: “Novel research thinking in an interdisciplinary group combined with the drive of the charity and the excellent relationship we have with Astra Zeneca have produced the potential for a great therapeutic leap. This also has potential for non-diabetic patients with COVD-19.”
He also has a dog called Norris.
When Professor Evans states “This drug has the potential to make a real difference to people with diabetes who contract coronavirus. The completion of the trial is a very significant moment, we look forward to seeing the results from the data collected. The trial completion enables us to progress commercialisation plans.”
The idea that a man like this is unaware of exactly what progress has been made, is inconceivable, imo.
