To answer your question (imo) people invest in exploration companies (oil pharma gold etc) as a get rich quick gamble. As these stocks can rise quickly and a lot (and then fall again more often than not) I should know, i was in ECR!

Investment in established companies such as pfc, bp etc is more of a long term deal like with bmn here.
