The UK will be dependent on imported gas for many years. Concerns for geopolitical risk of supplies from Russia and the Middle East will make it prudent to focus on short term capability to produce home supplies. Hydraulic fracturing will be sold to sceptics as a replacement for gas from these high risk sources. The security of supply arguments will allow the government to justify a start up of extraction of proven reserves.
