Hainan Mining ships maiden spodumene from Bougouni
China’s Hainan Mining announced Thursday its maiden spodumene concentrate shipment from its Bougouni lithium project in Mali, Kallanish learns.
The 30,000-tonne cargo will be trucked to the Port of San Pedro in Côte d'Ivoire, where it will be shipped to China’s Hainan Yangpu port. Spodumene from Mali will feed Hainan’s Xingzhihai lithium hydroxide project, which can produce 20,000 tonnes/year of battery-grade lithium hydroxide.
The inaugural shipment marks an “important milestone” for the commercial operation of the project, notes Hainan’s ceo Yusheng Yu.
Since trial production began in February, the company says it has overcome multiple challenges such as tight local explosives supply, fuel shortages and a “complex” security situation. It built a local production team with the support of expatriate technical staff, establishing a strong talent base for stable, long-term operations, it says.
Hainan Mining invested $118 million to acquire the lithium mine in 2023. The project has a JORC mineral resource estimated at 31.9m t, with an average lithium oxide grade of 1.06%.
