I like the spelling of "vertu." Don't let anyone tell you it's wrong; just say you prefer the 18th century spelling to the modern one. I didn't find it in Johnson's dictionary; but I have definitely seen it spelled like that in some texts from the period. On the other hand, the period was famous for its bad spelling, which is one reason why Johnson and the publishers who paid him thought that a dictionary was necessary.

You're right to say that GGP has fallen out of fashion (and the change of CEO and the start of a new year pricked the balloon); but there is a problem, with saying it was over-valued, and that is Berenberg's estimate of 33p as fair value. Of course, they may be wrong; but (with my veneration of antiquity) I tend to feel that Europe's oldest merchant bank knows more than I do.

When Callum was CEO, we had no communications at all apart from RNS announcements. The share price did very badly, and I'm not in favour of returning to those days. Gervaise was good at PR, as well as being good on the executive side. Let's hope the same is true of SD.

Thanks for this. You know much more than me (which is not very difficult). But looking at the list of projects, Ernest Giles seems to be the most likely for another joint venture. Of course, we have the unfortunate memory of Newmont walking away; but that may turn out to be a mistake on their part. Although I'm not a vengeful man, I hope so.

I think you're being slightly too hard on us lesser mortals. Many of us are reading and posting at the present time to re-assure ourselves that all will be well, and this motive (although not honourable) surely doesn't deserve to be blamed or despised. Also, some of the posts are very funny; Jerryspaniel's unexpected take on the lifestory of Robert Maxwell is one example. Laughter is therapeutic, particularly for those of us who are 35% poorer than we were a month ago.

I'm very impressed that so many shareholders can speak Hungarian. We must be a community of many talents.

For anyone interested in the darker side of egotism and corporate finance, I recommend the Radio 4 biography of Robert Maxwell. I've just listened to episode 4; it's really very good. Episode 5 (his death) tomorrow. Link below.

Yes, I've looked through his previous posts, too. He's certainly not one for idle chit-chat. And something of a nightbird; unless he's based in the United States, which had crossed my mind. Claims to be "a UK based mining engineer" (20.04, 9/12/20), and perhaps is. Could be an eccentric intellectual, who likes to debate his favourite subject. Or a hired gun, as you say. Anyhow, I think we can agree that his knowledge entitles him to a higher rate of pay than Arnold Palmer.

I think it's a good thing that you have done some trading. If you hadn't sold at a higher level, then you wouldn't have had the money to buy back, i.e. to support the share price in its hour of need. This was my own position, and the position of many others, who never sold at all. One feels completely helpless, and full of regrets.

I wonder if some of this rise is traders closing down their short positions. They've made a lot of money, if they sold at 30 or above.
