Wincanton, a leading supply chain partner for UK business, has been awarded a significant five-year contract renewal and expansion with J Sainsbury plc (Sainsbury’s) which sees it become the lead provider of transport services for the retailer.
Building on a 25-year relationship, Sainsbury’s will move transport services for most of its operations, including Sainsbury’s and Argos, and its central transport functions, to Wincanton. Wincanton will also welcome some 2,000 new colleagues from Sainsbury’s and its partners to join our 1,400 colleagues already dedicated to transport services.
Over the next 15 months Wincanton will work with colleagues, unions, Sainsbury’s, and its partners to support those who are impacted by the change.
By selecting Wincanton as its lead partner for transport services, Sainsbury’s will benefit from a simpler and stronger transport service which will provide better availability for its customers and will drive innovation and best practice across operations.
Wincanton’s proven experience and expertise in operating large-scale operations for major British businesses will also allow Sainsbury’s to be more agile and adapt quickly to an ever-changing external market. By operating at such significant scale, Wincanton will be able to drive modernisation, process improvements and efficiencies for Sainsbury’s.

“We’re delighted to have been selected as Sainsbury’s trusted transport partner of choice. Today’s announcement is testament to the high level of service and innovation that we deliver consistently, and further strengthens our long-standing partnership. We look forward to welcoming our new colleagues to the Wincanton team and continuing to deliver exceptional service to Sainsbury’s.”
I’m told that wincanton has lost its contract with the mod. Also it seems they are pulling out of the brick distribution. With all these big contract losses, my main big bear is, they have the most inept people working. Forget university degrees etc. it’s how you run a transport company successfully. It’s embarrassing. For a big company like this having idiots who totally mess up a contract. Wincanton needs to start getting rid of some who think but don’t know how to people who knows how to do it. It’s a fact Thomas muller wants wincanton to disappear

There’s is a driver shortage, partly don’t to brexit, IR35 and rule changes on foreign workers working in Uk. Working ain’t suffering as much as like DHL and stobart. But heading up towards Xmas, every one will suffer. If was like like wincanton, I’d look purchasing small haulage companies to back itself up. Nichols based down in sittingbourne or eldis based up in the northeast. Just a thought

AGGREGATE INDUSTRIES AND EDDIE STOBART LOGISTICS PARTNERSHIP BROUGHT TO ABRUPT HALT; WINCANTON TO TAKE OVER WORK.
Eddie Stobart Logistics (ESL) is to be replaced by Wincanton as logistics partner for Aggregate Industries’ Concrete Products division just over two years into a five-year contract, MT has learnt.
The contract went live in October 2016, having been publicised in June of that year. ESL replaced XPO Logistics, which had been the incumbent since 2008, after the deal was retendered.
However, sources close to the situation confirmed that relationship had now broken down and Wincanton would be taking over the contract from the start of March.
As part of the deal ESL drivers will be transferred under TUPE to Wincanton and all associated equipment is expected to be transferred.
MT understands that ESL and Aggregate Industries are locked in mediation over whether the move constitutes a breach of contract – something that could carry a multi-million pound implication. A spokesman for the aggregates company said it was unable to comment at this time.
In 2016 ESL CEO Alex Laffey said the operator’s multimodal capability – it has a rail hub at DIRFT – had proved decisive in securing the contract as it would support Aggregate Industries’ efforts “in reducing the amount of product moved by road” and help cut its carbon footprint.Aggregate Industries and Eddie Stobart
The operator had been moving finished products from the Bradstone, Charcon and Masterblock product ranges for Aggregate Industries from 14 UK sites since that date.
ESL staffed a new traffic office specifically for the contract and, in a move deemed innovative for the sector, used a significant number of curtainsiders rather than flat-bed trailers to move the product.
The partnership also provided Aggregate Industries with real-time tracking of its products while in transit.
A Wincanton spokesman declined to comment. Eddie Stobart was approached for comment but had not responded as MT went to press.

“Ultimately we’re delighted to continue to help Asda deliver the best value and service to their customers.”
