Could be a reaction to oil spiking as Iranian oil field hit. Then Iran issuing evacuation orders to all gulf oil and fuel facilities as they are threatening to attack them. Let’s hope not.

Some gamble that the share price will drop more than the dividend then buy back ex dividend, especially if something happens overnight in Iran. This share generally drops ex divi between 65% - 95% if the markets are neutral.

The divi is generally priced in by corporate investors maybe 2 to 3 weeks before ex divi sometimes even longer on very high yielding stocks.

Unfortunately the markets are being moved by fear driven by war headlines. Sentiment has moved against insurance companies. The FSTE looks as if it will open down. Even if results are good I’m sure the markets will concentrate on the negative and unjustly mark it down. Investing at present feels too much like blind gambling

Not so sure , look at the 500 million pound property portfolio Ali Khamene has quietly set up in the despised West for his son and other family members. I walk by one every morning in Bishops Avenue in London. All these dictators around the world always from their country/ people to enrich themselves

If the situation deteriorates/escalates and oil infrastructure etc hit this could quickly get out of hand. 6 months of extreme oil prices and related economic stress , increased inflation and interest rates could see this share in the 240 - 260 range.

Not just airlines but miners and financials also in the firing line. A complete nightmare but I’m hoping Trump will declare a win with an eye for the mid term elections but I fear it’s getting too late for that

The dividends are funded rather than earned.

The company’s Solvency II coverage ratio of 242%, supported by a £5bn surplus and operating capital generation of £928m gives it capacity to pay progressive dividends short to medium term but looks a bit shaky long term

JT - if you read my post I am a long term investor I’ve held some shares for 30 years. What I said was I got caught out by the Russian/Ukraine war by sitting on my hands. This time when it started I was amazed at how on the first day shares held up and sold all my financials insurance companies, Air.lines , miners. RR. Kept An oil fund and my oil stocks. It turned out to be a good call. De -risking at the start of a war does not make me a day trader just sensible in my mind

Classic Expectation V Delivery . I think the expectation was too high and the share has been trading on it. The main miss was the Solvency Ratio City expecting 220/225 %

This powers Dividend s, buybacks bulk annuity capacity and risk appetite.

210% is still classified as very strong and amply supports the buybacks

Unfortunately the good stuff in the results were ignored as the misses were far more material.

I sold most stuff day 2 of the war but have bought back these today.

I am generally a long term investor but got caught by the Russian/Ukrainian war so did the opposite this time

I intend to keep them in my ISA with dividend re-invest and spent it in 10 years

In my opinion this share is around fair value taking into account the macro’s at present. It looks cheap compared to 3 months ago but the fundamentals are changing. If oil stays high, interest rates raised, inflation and gilts up etc there will be a structural re-valuation. Hopefully the dividend will be protected as it does most of the heavy lifting

Oil over $100 , Gilts 4.67% and VIX 31.7 not a good mix for insurance companies generally.

I think it’s impossible to forecast the bottom as there are too many variables and unknowns.

After day one of markets opening I was amazed at how shares were holding up. I sold virtually everything, Financials/Insurance companies all my mining shares and airlines, RR The only ones I now have are BP , Shell and an oil fund. I sat on my hands when Russia / Ukraine unfolded and regretted it. I’ve now done the exact opposite. .

I am not trying to guess the bottom but will get back in with all my shares when things settle down.

I’ve been more proactive this time because I’m now retired so working on a shorter investment time

It could be a good thing to have a high solvency ratio considering we have a large MA portfolio.

There is a probable private credit issue on the horizon and we are particularly exposed as our MA mix is riskier than most on a unit bases due to our reliance on private credit.

I saw a model recently where a moderately low private credit default of 3% could cause a 10% hit to our share price. Insurers were being marked down a little because of this and then the Iran War happened .

On the plus side most commentators seem of the opinion that the dividend is sustainable and for many that’s the main reason for holding this long term in an ISA.
