DocM,
This is the trade concerned, which is shown by LSE as being a Buy.
This supports the view that it was indeed a buy, especially as it was so large:
"07-Sep-16 09:57:03 19.925 100,000 Buy* 18.75 20.00 19.93k O Trade Type: Ordinary"
It was clear on Tuesday morning that there were a few sells that weren't having the impact on the s.p. that you would expect, which suggested that there was a large buy order being filled.
When the trade was reported late it confirmed that.
There was no way that you could have sold 100,000 at that point for about 20p (although if you could have done that in itself would have been mildly positive), or that the s.p. would have finished down only half a penny on the day (at 19.5p) if the buy-sell balance had been shifted so strongly to selling as you suggest.
There were also two 10K. buys on Tuesday.
In general buying is more significant than selling, because people sell for many reasons, but generally only buy because they believe that it's a good investment, and have thousands of shares to choose from.
There is usually some profit-taking after a strong rise, which is why rises are often staggered, and that can create buying opportunities, as a 13.5-14p recently.
So what is more significant: ACO raising 2.5M. at a 71% premium from large investors who know what's going on; or some moderate selling from retail investors who have know idea what's going on.
Added to big buys in the market, which supports the view that behind the scenes activity is good.
Follow the money!
