Coal Import | Bangladesh Energy | Somoy TV

Currently, several large-scale coal-based power plants are operational in the country, including Payra Matarbari. And to keep these plants running, about 15 thousand crores of coal has to be imported every year. However, apart from the large coal mines, several coal mines discovered in the northern region have reserves of several billion tons of coal, but no government has taken any long-term planned initiative to extract coal.
The reserves of Dekhibara coal mine are 706 million tons. In addition, the reserves of Fulbari coal mine are 572 million tons, Khalaspir coal mine is 680 million tons, and Jamalganj coal mine is 550 million tons. According to experts, the mines, if put into proper use, will play a major role in addressing the ongoing and future crises in the power and energy sectors. We also need to convert our mining into smart mining. If we can do smart mining, it will be possible to reduce our energy dependence on other countries to a large extent. If we do not reduce our import dependence as economists say, it will have an impact not only on production but also on public life. We have to spend about 15,000 crore taka of foreign currency every year to import coal. When a global disaster occurs, when we cannot generate electricity, then its impact will affect our industries and our agricultural sector. Experts say that if planned and effective initiatives are taken, it is possible to create a market for coal exports by meeting domestic demand. Nazmul Islam Nishad, Soyo Sangbad, Rangpur
