I think you have the wrong conception of shorting....If you short a share, you initially sell the share (Which you don't own... Hence borrowing it). At some point you have to then buy that share back, at whatever the price is when you do so... You make/lose money on the difference in the price between selling and buying the share. One share sold then bought is still only one share....
I don't know what would happen if the person shorting the share goes bankrupt before completing the share buyback.
