Ambulances have begun moving towards east Aleppo, the first step in a long-awaited evacuation of the wounded in the besieged districts of the city. “Operation is starting, ambulances are moving,” a spokesperson for the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) told the Guardian. The movement came almost five hours after the evacuation was due to begin, when the process appeared stalled while medical teams waited amid reports of gunfire. The first convoy of 10 vehicles is expected to transport 200-250 wounded people in its first rotation and there will be multiple crossings throughout the day. The evacuation is being overseen by the Syrian Arab Red Crescent and ICRC, which said it would include the wounded and all civilians.

The British defence secretary, Sir Michael Fallon, is to announce that UK forces have arrived in the Middle East to help train moderate Syrian rebels engaged in the fight against Islamic State. Fallon is hosting a conference in London of defence ministers from the 67-member US-led coalition against Isis, and the defence secretary is keen to talk up the British contribution. The conference is being held to discuss the next phase of the campaign against Isis as the group is squeezed in its Syrian headquarters in Raqqa and in its Iraqi headquarters in Mosul.
