15lives I worked in deep mines built in the late 19th century, water was a major problem. Pumping water up 800 plus yards would have been impossible. To overcome the problem they built caverns at different levels as storage for the water. These were dug by hand in rock, many of which were the size of football pitches and 5-6 yards high.
