Labour’s Food Inflation Surges4 Mar 2025 09:44
“Shop prices rose at their fastest pace in a year last month as the cost of breakfast staples including butter, cheese, eggs and bread jumped in supermarkets.
Shop prices increased by 0.4pc between January and February – the sharpest monthly rise in 12 months, according to the British Retail Consortium (BRC).
Food prices also rose by 0.4pc last month compared with January and jumped 2.1pc year-on-year.
Households were warned to brace for further pain as the BRC said food price rises are expected to hit 4pc later this year, almost double the current rate of growth.
She added: “Inflation will likely rise across the board as the year progresses with geopolitical tensions running high and the imminent £7bn increase in costs from the autumn Budget and the new poorly designed packaging levy arriving on the doorsteps of retailers.”
Some of the UK’s largest high street names, including Tesco, Marks & Spencer and Sainsbury’s, have fired warning shots over the Chancellor’s raid, saying they would make store closures and job cuts inevitable.
‘Swathe of costs’
Ms Dickinson said retailers would have to push up prices further to cope with the soaring costs.
She added: “If Government wants to keep inflation at bay, enable retailers to focus on growth and help households, it must mitigate the swathe of costs facing the industry.”
The figures will pile fresh pressure on Rachel Reeves, who has argued that her top priority is “getting more money in people’s pockets”.
Already, data published last month suggested that British households were now poorer than when Labour came to power. Real GDP per head – a proxy for living standards – dipped by 0.1pc in the final three months of last year, following a 0.3pc drop in the third quarter.”
Who voted for these morons ? Not me.
