“Sir Keir Starmer has been accused of cowardice after ruling out a visit to Runcorn ahead of a crucial by-election this week.

Downing Street said the Prime Minister had no plans to go to Runcorn and Helsby in Cheshire, where voters will elect a new MP on Thursday after Mike Amesbury, the former Labour MP, was jailed for assault.

On Monday, Sir Keir, who was on a visit in Lancashire, admitted the by-election would be “tough” as it tried to head off a challenge from Reform.

Labour’s own membership expects the party to lose the seat, according to a Survation poll earlier this month. A survey by Ipsos suggests that Sir Keir’s personal ratings are much lower nationally than those of Nigel Farage.
