“Rachel Reeves has “opened the floodgates” to bumper civil servant pay raises after removing the need for ministers to approve of salaries above £150,000.

Under new civil service guidance issued by the Treasury, only earnings above £174,000 and bonuses more than £25,000 must be signed off, a rise from £150,000 and £17,500 respectively.

The change will affect 260 civil servants who earn between £150,000 and £200,000 a year and 30 mandarins who earn more than £200,000. A further 2,915 staff earn more than £100,000 a year.

William Yarwood, of the TaxPayers’ Alliance campaign group, said: “Taxpayers will be outraged that top civil servants are being handed even more generous pay raises with less oversight.

“This quiet rule change opens the floodgates to inflated salaries behind closed doors at a time when Whitehall should be making cuts.

“With the public sector already bloated and unaccountable, ministers must slam the brakes on these cosy pay arrangements and start defending the interests of taxpayers.”

“The Institute of Directors’ (IoD) closely watched survey of bosses’ confidence tumbled to minus 53 in June from minus 35 in May. The lobby group blamed the impact of the Chancellor’s National Insurance tax raid, which took effect in April, and gloom from Donald Trump’s trade war.

Against this weak backdrop, Anna Leach, the IoD’s chief economist, warned that a further tax raid in the autumn risked being self-defeating as it could cripple growth and lead to even lower taxes for the Treasury. She said: “If you go after businesses again, there is a very real danger of that undermining the UK economy and leaving it in a less stable position – and undermining the very revenues that you’re trying to drive up.”

“The chief executive of Lloyds Bank has compared Labour’s pension plans to policies used by communist China.

Charlie Nunn said new powers allowing Rachel Reeves to force pension funds to invest in Britain were akin to capital controls used by Beijing.

Mr Nunn told the Financial Times: “Mandating allocations of pension funds is a form of capital control. I have spent 10 years of my working life in China and many jurisdictions where there are capital controls.

“That is a different model and that is a difficult slope for an economy that believes it is an open economy.”

The Chancellor has been pushing for fund managers to put more pension savings into UK “private assets”, such as venture capital and infrastructure, to boost investment into Britain and economic growth.

As part of this drive, the Treasury has said it will create a “backstop” power in new pensions legislation that will allow Ms Reeves to force pension funds to invest more in Britain if they fail to do so voluntarily.”

The stupid cow spent £9.4bn on public sector pay rises over and above the 2% the Tories had budgeted to give them (which was the inflation rate at the time of the election).
